  4. Objectives • Develop a top-notch career and placement center • Provide adequate student access to computers • Make higher utilization of computing resources • Conduct renovations during the summer months

  5. Career Center Expansion

Career Center Details The west end of the North Computing Center (approximately one half of Room #75), plus adjacent offices (Rooms #77 through #86), will be modified for use as the college’s Career and Placement Center. Conference rooms and similar meeting areas within the Career and Placement Center may serve as student study rooms during the evenings and on the weekends. • Reception Area • Director’s Office • Staff Offices – three full-time staff and two graduate assistants • Library – including three desktop computers with Internet Access • Interview Rooms – max of three occupants, Internet access (wireless coverage in this area) • Conference/Student Study Rooms – At least two rooms, max of ten to twelve occupants, Internet access (wireless coverage in this area)

  7. Computer Lab Configurations

  8. Team Room Details The east end of the North Computing Center (approximately one half of Room #75) will be modified for use as student study rooms. Each room will be designed to accommodate six to seven students, and equipped with desktop computers and furniture to accommodate group and individual study. Wireless access will be supported in this area so that students may use notebook computers in the study rooms. Four to six study rooms are anticipated, accommodating 24 to 42 students. • Four to six study rooms, each of which will accommodate six to seven occupants • Designed for team work and individual study, including one to three desktop computers (Ethernet connections), plus Internet access (wireless) for notebook computers • Adjustable walls are preferred to fixed walls • Adjacent offices (Rooms #66 and #67) will be retained for computer lab support and administration • Entry area (#68) may be modified to accommodate network printer

  9. Room 054 Details Room 054 will be redesigned to serve as an open student lab; i.e., similar to the current use of the North Computing Center. This lab will be available to university students during regular operating hours on a walk-in basis. Approximately 38 computers will be placed in this lab. Occasionally, this lab may be closed to walk-in use, when needed for instructor-led class sessions. • Objective is to place at least 38 computers in this lab • This lab should be designed for walk-in use, not instructor-led class sessions • New computer furniture • Designed for individual study • 42”x30” for individual stations • Multi-person work station configurations may be considered • At least one ADA compliant computer station must be placed in the lab • Location of network printer is unknown • White boards may be removed • New carpeting on raised floor

  10. Room 045 Details Room 045 will be redesigned to serve as the CIS Computer Lab. This lab will be available to CIS students only during normal operating hours on a walk-in basis. This lab will be used by CIS students to complete course work, and it will host software unique to the CIS program. Approximately 36 computers will be placed in this lab. Occasionally, this lab may be closed to walk-in use, when needed for instructor-led class sessions. • Objective is to place at least 36 computers in this lab • This lab should be designed for walk-in use, not instructor-led class sessions • New computer furniture • Designed for individual study, with some informal group areas • 42”x30” for individual stations • Multi-person work station configurations may be considered in the northwest end of the room, and wherever else they may be useful • Student assistant area at the entrance will be removed • Location of network printer is unknown • New carpeting on raised floor • Adjacent offices should not be considered at this point

  11. Room 059 Details Room 059 will be redesigned to serve as: (1) an Information Security lab; and (2) a reconfigurable CIS lab to support special purpose courses and projects. Access to this lab will be restricted to students enrolled in courses requiring access to special purpose software or access to computing equipment which may be reconfigured on demand. This lab may be accessible by CIS students when Room 045 is used for instructor-led class sessions. Approximately 17 computers will be placed in this lab. • Objective is to place at least 17 computers in this lab • This lab should be designed for walk-in use, not instructor-led class sessions • New computer furniture • Designed for individual study • 42”x30” for individual stations • Server and equipment rack may be needed at the front of the room • Multiple Ethernet connections (2 or 3) may be required for each computer • ADA access should be considered • White boards may be removed • New carpeting on raised floor

  12. Davidson Room 304 Details Davidson Room 304 will be redesigned to serve as the primary lab for instructor-led class sessions. The lab will be reserved for CIS 100 lab sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Mondays and Tuesdays, this lab will be accessible to CBPA course instructors on a reservation basis. Approximately 45 computers will be placed in this lab. At times when schedule conflicts prevent an instructor from taking her/his class to the Davidson lab, CBPA Room 054 or CBPA Room 045 may be reserved for instructor-led sessions; i.e., it will not be available as a walk-in lab for general student use. • Objective is to place at least 45 computers in this lab • This lab should be designed for instructor-led class sessions • New computer furniture • Designed for individual study • 42”x30” or 36”x30” for individual stations • Overhead computer projectors will be placed in each end of the lab • At least one ADA compliant computer station must be placed in each end of the lab • Location of the instructor station is unknown • Location of network printer is unknown • New carpeting throughout

  15. Printer Access Printer access must be provided at a convenient location within the lab complex. Room 054 appears to be the most convenient location for student access. Printers must be accessible from computers in this lab, from the computers placed in student study rooms (Room 075), and from notebook computers within the lab complex. The technical solution to printer access, including printer support, will be resolved by April 30.

  16. SLA with LAN Team Support of the labs will be required following the reconfiguration. Currently, the CBPA uses a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with IT’s LAN Team to provide support for the college’s computer labs (Rooms 045, 054, 059, and Davidson Room 304). It is anticipated that a comparable SLA will be used to support the reconfigured labs and the computers in the student study rooms. The terms of the new SLA will be resolved by April 30.

  17. External Use of CBPA Labs The CBPA will allow non-college use of the computer labs (e.g., freshman orientation, Testing Services, etc.) at times when scheduled CBPA activities are not impacted. Procedures for requesting access to the labs will be resolved April 30.
