  5. Africa • Countries gain independence from colonizing countries, but many are still controlled by Europeans • S. Africa develops system of “apartheid” which is its version of American slavery • System finally ends in 90’s with the ending of the apartheid govt and the election of Nelson Mandela • Genocide begins in some African countries as traditional tribal enemies get hold of weapons and turn them on those they have traditionally fought (Rwanda, i.e.) • Africa is slowly stabilizing as a continent
