  1. Neutralization

  2. NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS • The reaction of an acid with a base to form a salt and water HCl + NaOHNaCl + H2O

  3. NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS • Neutralization reactions are exothermic. • Give off energy • Spontaneous • Mg(OH)2 + 2HCl  MgCl2 + 2H2O • 1 mole of Mg(OH)2 neutralizes 2 moles of HCl

  4. NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS • Titration- the process of adding a substance of known concentration to a substance of unknown concentration until the substance of unknown concentration is completely reacted. • Titrant – solution of known concentration used to titrate a solution of unknown concentration • Also called standard solution

  5. NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS • Indicators are often used to determine this equivalence point. • The # of moles of H+ = # moles of OH- • This signals the end of the reaction • You should be able to identify indicators such as bromthymol blue and phenolphthalein. • The point at which the indicator used in the titration changes color is called the end point.

  6. NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS • Buret- instrument used in a titration.

  7. Question Label the parts on this buret. Indicate where the titrant would go.
