  1. Safety – How Much Do You Know? Examples of Safety Devices and Controls Used Everyday on Worksites NAWIC Region 1 Fall Forum October 20, 2012

  2. Caution Tape • Warns of Danger/Hazards • Prevents people from entering and area • Used as a barricade • Used for traffic control • Prevents accidents (when adhered to)

  3. Hearing Protection • Used for loud or prolonged noise • Place inside ear canal • Also prevents water, debris, dirt, & wind from entering the ear canal • Disposable • Must be used correctly to effectively work

  4. Power Line Covers • Electrical Insulation or insulating blankets • Also known as “booting” • Non-conductive • Used when a structure, equipment, or material will be in close proximity to power lines • Contact with lines is not required to create a conductive current – arc-ing is possible near lines and weather could affect travel distance

  5. Gas Monitor • Personal air quality monitor for confined spaces • Includes probe, light, alarm • Laser particle counter • Scientific proof of indoor air quality • Can detect any gas – most common: • (1) O2, (2) Explosion, (3) CO Carbon Monoxide, (4) H2SO4 Hydrogen Sulfide

  6. Traffic Control Devices • Designates hazard or direction • High visibility • Keeps drivers/pedestrians/workers safe • Help direct traffic • Versatile/movable • Barrels can be weighted with sand (or tied to a draw bridge) • Indoor/outdoor use

  7. Crane Signals • Trained signal person • Used to communicate with operator • Controls load movements • Use requires a clear view of load and operator • Used when operator does not have direct load view throughout lift

  8. Temporary Fence • Keeping site safe is priority • Maintaining site fencing keeps public out and workers within • Reduces theft by controlling site access points

  9. First Aid Kit • Required on all sites with clear directions to nearest hospital • Size is dependent on number of daily workforce • Multiple locations may be required • Basic wound care, aspirin, eye wash minimum requirement

  10. Hepa Filter Drill Attachment • Vacuum attachment to collect dirt and hazards during drilling activity • Prevents particles from entering air • When utilized with a water sprayer – acceptable means of drilling through lead paint • Can be used in clean rooms and ICRA settings

  11. Safety Glasses • Used for eye protection • Required for tasks such as grinding, buffing, welding, chipping, cutting, or pouring chemicals • Should have full wrap-around design • Prescription safety glasses can be obtained • Often a jobsite safety standard

  12. Leather Gloves • OSHA required PPE when applicable • Protection against: cuts, abraisions, temperature extremes, burns, bruises, electrical shock, chemical spills

  13. Grinder Guard • Guards are required on all grinders to deflect a loose cutting wheel and prevent severe injury and amputation • Replace damaged guards immediately • Inspect wheel attached and guard prior to each use

  14. Hard Hat • Head protection from falling objects, head bumping, accidental electrical hazard contact • Must resist penetration, absorb shock, be water and fire resistant • Internal suspension must be 1 to 1-1/4” from head • Clear adjustment instruction required • All carry manufacture dates and must be replaced within 5 years

  15. Safety Harness • Fall protection required when performing work above 6 feet • Utilized with a lanyard as a complete fall arrest system when fastened to a 3000 lbs or greater structure point or structurally designed cable system • Required for all lift operation, roof, façade, leading edge, and shaft work

  16. Hole Cover • Notice and protection required for floor holes not barricaded • Must be secured to prevent displacement • OSHA requires for holes larger than 4 square inches • Must support twice expected load • Must be clearly marked with “hole”

  17. Insulated Tools • Insulated handles required for all electrical work • Prevent electric shock • Without insulated tools hands can be burned instantly upon electric current contact • All tools should be insulated to prevent accidental use at inappropriate time

  18. Jersey Barrier • Direct flow of traffic • Provide substantial physical barrier to prevent worker injury • Often used during roadway repairs/construction for worker safety • Use allows traffic to maintain higher speeds without jeopardizing worker safety

  19. Lanyard • Used in conjunction with harness and tie-off point for complete fall protection system • Locking clip to prevent accidental release • Custom lengths available • Minimum 3000 lb rating

  20. Rail Safety Vest • Used for non-signalman workers • Fluorescent background with reflective tape • Utilized to increase work site visibility particularly to heavy equipment operators • Differentiates workers from public

  21. Rebar Caps • Protective caps for vertical reinforcing rods • Also used for anchor bolts, survey pins and other small diameter protrusions • Required to prevent impalement • No other covers are acceptable

  22. Confined Space Rescue Tripod • Mechanized manhole or vertical shaft rescue harness • Adjustable for size and weight of worker • Fall arrest device with mechanized and manual pulleys • Telescoping legs allows adjustment to size of hole • Can be configured for retreival of a litter basket

  23. Retractable Lanyard • Used in conjunction with harness and tie-off point for complete fall protection system • Locking clip to prevent accidental release • Self retracting • Allows for greater movement than standard lanyard

  24. Roadway Safety Vest • Used only by qualified and designated signalmen when required by location • Fluorescent background with reflective tape • Utilized to increase work site visibility particularly to heavy equipment operators • Differentiates workers from public • Often used on roadway projects

  25. Steel Toe Boots • Steel toes prevent foot injury from falling and rolling objects • Rubber soles prevent electric shock, impact shock, slipping • High top design support ankles • Most are water proof to prevent athletes foot and other flesh diseases • Important investment as most workers stand for their 8 hour shift
