  1. PLAGIARISM What is plagiarism? How do I avoid it?

  2. WHAT IS PLAGIARISM? • Using another person’s work without giving proper credit • Theft of intellectual property • A form of cheating or stealing • In some cases, it is against the law

  3. Is this Plagiarism? On the bus to school, you borrow a friend’s homework and copy the answers. YES

  4. Is this Plagiarism? You and a friend are working on the same assignment. You each have individual papers to turn in, but you discussed your answers together and all the answers are exactly the same. YES

  5. Is this Plagiarism? On a research paper, you copy and paste relevant pieces of text from online sources, citing as you write your paper. NO

  6. Is this Plagiarism? You turn in an essay you found on the internet and claim it as your own. YES

  7. Is this Plagiarism? You are writing a scientific paper, but you do not reference a book that states that water is H2O (a commonly known scientific fact). NO

  8. Is this Plagiarism? You were up late the night before a paper is due, and the paper is not very good. You ask for help to severely edit (rewrite) your paper. YES

  10. HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM 1.GIVE CREDIT & CITE SOURCE • Use APA or MLA style for citing sources(Pali uses MLA; check with your English teacher) • Books • Magazines • Periodicals • Web sites • Journals • Multimedia • Images

  11. WHY CITE SOURCES? It is important to cite your sources for two reasons: • to check information • to give credit to those who worked hard to create the source (for ethical reasons)

DON’T COPY • Nevercopyanything directly from a book, magazine, or newspaper and pass it of as your own. • Never print directly from the Internet and pass it off as your own. • This includes copying from other students. PENALTIES FOR PLAGIARISM • Plagiarism is dishonest and unethical • You can lose your job, even go to jail! • In this class, anyone involved will receive a zero (F) for the assignment; and the deans’ office is notified. • At Pali, College center is notified after two incidences, as well asany colleges to which you apply! • In colleges, students can be expelled!
