The Awakening • Genre: Novel of intellectual, moral, spiritual evolution; novel of artistic realization/development; tragedy • Setting: Grand Isle and New Orleans, 1899 • Main Character(s): Edna Pontellier • Conflict: Edna struggles with wanting independence when society wants her to be a wife & mother • Plot: Edna spends time at home and vacationing. She strives for independence in her life. Many people influence her decisions and thoughts. • Themes: Female independence, self-expression, solitude because of independence

A Separate Peace • Genre: Coming of age story; tragedy • Setting: New England 1957-58, but flashes back to 1942-43 • Main Character(s): Gene & Finny • Conflict: Gene struggles with his love and hate for his best friend Finny • Plot: Gene and Finny’s experiences at school. Athletics and transformation of self play a large part. • Themes: Creation of inner enemies, Co-dependency’s threat to identity
