  1. Research Notes: American Colonization

  2. Moses Austin a failed business man from Missouri in search of a new fortune got permission from Spain to bring 300 families to settle Texas. Before he died, he wrote a letter to his son, Stephen F. Austin; begging him to take over his contract and settle Texas. Austin was a good son and did as his father asked.

  3. Anglo-Americans like the old three hundred were attracted to Hispanic Texas because of inexpensive land. Undeveloped land in the United States land offices cost $1.25 an acre for a minimum of 80 acres ($100) payable at the time of purchase. In Texas each head of a family, male or female, could claim a headright of 4,605 acres (one league-4,428 acres of grazing land and one labor-177 acres of irrigable farm land) at a cost about four cents an acre ($184) payable in six years, a sum later reduced by state authorities. • A second attraction was that Mexico and the United States had no agreements enabling creditors to collect debts or to return fugitives. Therefore, Texas was a safe haven for the many Mississippi valley farmers who defaulted on their loans when agricultural prices declined at the end of the War of 1812 and bankers demanded immediate payment. Faced with seizure of their property and even debtors' prison in many states, men loaded their families and belongings into wagons and headed for the Sabine River, where creditors could not follow and there was opportunity to start over.

  4. This first grant to found a colony in Texas, dated on the 17th of January, 1821. • To become Mexican citizen you had to: • be Roman Catholics, or agree to become so before they entered the Spanish territory • they had to be of good character and hard working, • take an oath of loyalty to the king of Mexico, to defend the government and political constitution of the Spanish monarchy

  5. American colonists to Texas were from all over the east and many more countries. Most colonists were from the state of Tennessee.

  6. Review Texas Colonization • Reasons people settled in Texas • Patterns of settlement, geographic factors • Economic activities immigrants used to meet wants and needs • Differences between Spanish colonial and Mexican Government
