  3. Attitude Towards the King • Previous to his flight the king had been seen as the father of the people (a good king badly advised) • In 1790 he had taken an oath to support the constitution and was popular with the people • However, public opinion drastically changed after his “flight” Bio.true story, Louis XVI Biography, 1996-2013, http://www.biography.com/people/louis-xvi-9386943 (Oct. 16, 2013).

  5. What To Do With the King? • The first trial determined that he was guilty of treason  most were in agreement on this issue (693 to 28) • The second trial was to determine his punishment  this is where we see a division (Jacobins vs. Girondins) (387 supported execution, 334 imprisonment or exile) moderate 3 5 2 6 radical conservative 1 7

  6. Trial in National Convention, 1792 Trial began in Dec. 1792, ended Jan. 1793. Mount Holyoke College, French Revolution II, https://www.mtholyoke.edu/courses/rschwart/hist151/French%20Revolution%20II/album/slides/Louis%20first%20appearance%20at%20trial.html (Oct. 16, 2013).

Continuity and Change • Turning Point • Point after which the pace or direction of change CHANGES • What are three turning points in the revolution so far? • Progress and Decline • Different for different groups of people • Who are the main beneficiaries of the revolution, so far? • Who is suffering because of the revolution, so far?

  9. The Terror • There is a legitimate fear of counter revolution and a climate of radicalism as France is losing the war and facing enemies. The new Jacobin government fears losing control • It’s a crisis
