  1. How does the road affect a plant’s diversity? By RababJafri, Niki Cheney, Julia Wang and Maggie Berwick

  2. Hypothesis If the diversity of the species of organisms around the road is measured, then the plants closer to the road will be more diverse than the ones further away. The genetic drift, abiotic factors such as cars, sediment from the road, and splattered milkshakes, kill off the dominant species of grass and flowers that originally lived in the environment along the road, leaving the weeds and other invaders to appear. The new guests bring a delightful party for the environment to host, and there will be more species.

  3. Design of Experiment Independent variable: how far from the road we were measuring (meters) Dependent variable:diversity of the plants (number of types of plants) Measured using a 7 inch by 7 inch square.

  4. Wood Chips

  5. All data are counted by the number of species within the 7 inch by 7 inch box.

  6. Grass Number of species

  7. Weeds Number of specie

  8. In conclusion, our hypothesis of, if the diversity of the plants are measured, then the plants closer to the road willl be more diverse. Our hypothesis was incorrect because, as shown in the graph, there were more different types of plants closer to the tree. Our findings probably do not compare to those you would find in an actual population because most land near a road is not occuied by plants. It is dirt or gravel. Next time we would use a bigger area with a larger measuring tool in order to get more data and show more diversity in our results.
