  2. Apprenticeship What is an Apprenticeship? A way of learning a skilled trade from professional tradesperson (journeyperson). “Earn while you Learn” Combines on the job training (90%) with an in school (10%) component at a college , union or technical school Best accessed in high school through Co-op Ed. (OYAP) and technology based courses. Consider a Specialist High Skills Major High demand, highly skilled, practical hands on careers with above average salaries. Generally take from 2-5 years to complete depending on the trade.

Apprenticeship Requirements • Most require OSSD • Many apprenticeships require Math • Some require Chemistry or Physics • Most can be accessed by any academic HS stream (College, University or Workplace) • After HS, students must find an employer to apprentice with. • All require strong work ethic & commitment

  4. Trades in Ontario-Over 150 Great Opportunities ! Examples of trades in each of 4 sectors include: Service: Network Cabling Specialist, Baker, Early Childhood Educator, Hairstylist Industrial: General Machinist, Industrial Electrician, Tool and Die Maker, Welder Motive Power : Auto Service Technician, Auto body Repairer, Motorcycle Mechanic. Construction: General Carpenter, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, Plumber.

  5. Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) Register in Co-op Sign and train as an apprentice in high school Earn apprenticeship hours/competencies and high school credits

  6. Co-Operative Education Offered as a 2 credit course in gr.11 and as a 2, 3 or 4 credit option in gr. 12 Students are at a work placement for 14 days, the 15 th day is spent at school.

  7. Co-Operative Education Evaluation is based on in class work, assignments and workplace performance. Teacher monitors student progress through frequent workplace visits. Can use up to 2 co-op credits to count as compulsory credits for Group 1, 2 or 3.

  8. Specialist High Skills Major-SHSM Is available in Manufacturing and Business Includes a bundle of specific courses Includes co-op Provides recognized training & certification Offers experiential learning activities Develops transferable skills Great for all post-secondary pathways !
