Strategic Committee for Information and Data (SCID) An ad hoc ICSU strategic committee • Charge: To guide and oversee the reform of the WDC system and the Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical Data Analysis Services (FAGS) • First meeting at ICSU HQ in Paris; July 24-25 • Interim report to ICSU to be issued soon • Next SCID meeting in November 07 • Draft report to ICSU February 08 • Third Meeting of SCID March 08 • Recommendations subject to acceptance at the October 20-24, 2008 ICSU General Assembly No results of the review have been published so far FAGS Meeting, April 2, 2007 J.B. WDC White Paper • Summary of WDC activities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats • Presented the results of the WDC Directors Meeting, including 13 recommendations which included: • WDCs must be more responsive to ICSU’s programs data needs • IPY is a major ICSU program, therefore, WDCs need to participate in the IPYDIS • GEOSS is also a major priority of ICSU and the WDCs must be ready to participate as appropriate • WDC must become interoperable using recognized standards • The WDC System and Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical Data Analysis Services (FAGS) should discuss common operations and a possible merger of their activities. • WDCs need to integrate their future IT activities with new state-of-the-art technologies like Virtual Observatories and the activities of electronic Geophysical Year • The WDC system needs to expand its discipline structure and its geographic distribution to better serve ICSU programs Copy of the white paper available from Dave Clark FAGS Meeting, April 2, 2007 J.B.
