Between 2003 and 2007, several major data breaches resulted in the loss of millions of sensitive records. In 2003, AOL faced a security breach that compromised 92 million email records. In 2005, CardSystems revealed illegal access to data from 40 million credit card customers. The following year, TJX disclosed a breach affecting 45.7 million credit and debit card accounts. Additionally, the US Department of Veterans Affairs reported data theft involving 28.6 million veterans' information. Finally, in 2007, HM Revenue & Customs lost records of 25 million families.
