Relative Location • One location in relation to (or compared) to another location. • More easily determined by using compass references. • Relative location can change depending on what a location is in relation or compared to. • Example: • Badger is WEST of Gander. • Badger is EAST of Springdale. • St. John’s is 424 Km EAST of Grand Falls-Windsor • Yukon is NORTH of British Columbia

Lines of Latitude • Also called “Parallels” • Parallel, horizontal lines on globe. • Determine location/position North or South (of the equator). • Go from Equator (0o lat.) to North Pole (90o North Latitude) and South Pole (90o South Latitude) • Increase by increments of 10o • Equator is the MOST prominent. • Equator divides world into Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Lines of Longitude • Also called “Meridians” • Vertical lines that go from Pole to Pole on globe. • Determine location/position East or West (of the Prime Meridian). • Prime Meridian is 0o at Greenwich, England. • Meridians go from 0o to 180o West and 0o to 180o East. • The Prime Meridian divides world into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

  12. Absolute Location • Location as defined by a set of points or coordinates. • Latitude and longitude!! • Absolute location does not change!! • Badger is located at 49o North latitude and 56o West longitude….
