  1. Course Introduction Canadian Geography 11

  2. This course will look at Canadian geography in a very broad sense. You will learn how geographers answer the following “big questions”: • How does geography affect the lives of Canadians? • What are the similarities and differences in geographic regions of Canada? • We will cover a large range of topics, (regions, climate, the natural environment, economics, sustainability, aboriginal issues and culture) and build on skills from previous social studies courses in interpreting and using geographic information.

  3. Units of Study • Unit A: Canada and Map Skills • Unit B: Regions of Canada • Unit C: Climate • Unit D: Natural Resources • Unit E: Sustainability • Unit F: Economic Differences • Unit G: Global Links • Unit H: Aboriginal Issues • Unit I: Culture • For each area of study the outcomes will be listed on each assignment.   4. Evaluation • Your final grade in this course will be determined as follows: • Projects 25% • Tests/Quizzes 20% • Assignments 30% • Exam 20% • Test grades include quizzes, which are sometimes “open notebook” and not announced (surprise!). You must take good notes to succeed!

  5. Tracking Work • Power School portal- you will access to all your grades which are on line. • Assignment & work check lists will be post on the wall in the classroom • Personal folder- you will have a folder into which any marked work will be passed back to you. • Marking folder- any work that needs to be graded is to be passed into the marking folder, or as directed.

  6. Materials You Will Need • Binder or folder for your notes, with loose leaf and blank paper • Pencil, eraser, pen and ruler • Colouring pencils or markers

Student Expectations • In class behavior • Arrive on time and prepared to work • Late on the bell • Attendance early part of class(10 min.) • Take good notes and pay attention to course notes • Washroom and leaving class • Take the tag • Sign out in office • Let me know early • iPods, cell phones & other electronics to be used approperiately • No food or drinks around the computers

  9. Student Expectations • Use class time effectively • You will be given ample time to complete all work for each module • If you finish your work in advance of the allotted time, you will still need to come to class and be productive • ACRs • Work outside of the classroom must be supervised • Garbage: • 3 bin system • Waste • Paper • Bottles & cans • Clean up after yourself • Respect the materials you use and borrow of fellow classmates and school resources

  10. Emergencies • In the event of a fire alarm, proceed to lower parking lot

  11. Accidents & Injuries • Report them to a teacher or the office as soon as possible • It is better is have it reported
