  2. Now Interviewing: Positive, enthusiastic, highly energetic SCHOOL SPIRIT LEADERS Must be self motivated, willing to work hard and have a desire for fun – cheerleader style! Love of THS sports and activities a must! Our ideal candidate will be excited to: • be ambassadors of good citizenship and sportsmanship • Maintain a positive attitude (in person and on all social media sites) at ALL times • work with band, belles, and other organizations to promote school spirit • Perform chants and dances and lead (or sometimes follow) the fans at football, basketball, and volleyball games • Make posters or write notes of encouragement or congratulations for various sports and activities • Attend community events • Be a leader and, when appropriate, a FOLLOWER

  4. Tryouts • Tryout material is due no later than 3 pm on TUESDAY February 25th. Material can be turned into Coach Thibodeaux or the front office. Current junior high students need to turn in their packets to the THS front office. • Clinic is Tuesday and Wednesday February 25th and 26th from 4:30-6:00. • Thursday February 27th is an open practice from 4:30-6:00. • Friday February 28 is mock tryouts from 4:30-6:30 pm. Candidates MUST wear what they are going to wear for tryouts on this day. • Tryout clothes: Black shorts and PLAIN white top. Top MUST be dress code. No spaghetti straps. Shirt must tuck in. Shorts can not be rolled more than once. Hair needs to be up in a ponytail. Ribbon is optional but if you wear it must be white. All white shoes. Nothing with school or competitive cheer on the shirt or shorts can be worn. ABSOLUTELY NO JEWELRY! • Roll call is promptly at 4:00 pm on Tuesday March 4th. Try-outs begin at 4:30. • Announcement of cheerleaders will be on Friday March 7th at 4:30 • New squad members can meet us at Il Primo at 4:30 (not mandatory, bring money) • Tryouts are closed to parents. • You may not bring in video cameras to record material– nor can they use their phones to record.

After Try-Outs • Mandatory cheerleader and parent meeting 3/19 at 6:00 pm • $200 deposit for camp (no checks – cash or money order made out to THS Activity Fund) • Mandatory uniform fitting 3/28: JV 6:00, Varsity 7:00 • Practice in the Spring: April 29-May 22 • Returning Varsity – Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:45-4:00 • JV and New Varsity – Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30-6:00

  6. Cheer Time Commitment • Cheerleading is a 10 month commitment. • Cheer for football, volleyball, basketball (girls and boys), and playoff matches. • Begin in Spring, break for June, come back in late July. • Cheer camp is mandatory…July 28- July 31st . Camp will be held at Moody Gardens in Galveston. Camp Fees are non-refundable. • Practices the previous week are crucial and are mandatory. Week of July 21st – times TBA. • Practice the week of August 11th. Mandatory for all cheerleaders to attend • Fall: 1 to 2 games per week (football and volleyball), homecoming week, Holiday Bowl, other appearances • Winter/Spring: 1 to 2 games per week (girls and boys basketball, possible attendance at other sports events) • However – not many afterschool practices because we have cheerleading 7th period and it is utilized as a practice.

  7. Cost to Families - $875 • Your 1st deposit ($200) is due March 19. Then $168.75 is due: April 19, May 19, June 19, and July 19. You have the option of paying at ONE time or over 6 payments. • All payments must be cash or money order • All payments must be received by July 19 or cheerleader will not be able to attend camp – ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS! • Total actual cost (including camp gifts, Christmas party, etc.) for cheerleaders is around $950 • Cheerleaders will keep the uniform and accessories (including poms) that they purchase.

  8. Excused vs. Unexcused Absences • Attendance is vital at all events. • Participation at all events is mandatory unless otherwise stated. • Excused absences include: illness, death in family, etc. • Unexcused absences include: work, competitive cheerleading practices, studying, etc. (3 demerits) • One unexcused absence per cheer year may be substituted with an excused absence and the cheerleader/mascot will not be penalized. However, this must be approved by Coach Thibodeaux or Coach Holler at least 48 hours prior to the absence. If the absence will occur on a game day, no more than 3 cheerleaders may use an unexcused absence. The first 3 to give notice will be excused.

  9. Demerit Guidelines • Demerits are in place for discipline and to ensure achievement of our mission statement • 3 week suspension = 15 demerits • Dismissal = 20 demerits • Dismissal and Suspension guidelines come straight from the district guidelines in the handbook • Begin Friday once new squad is announced • No merits

  10. Judging Form • Review Judges form • Please make sure your daughters/sons are SAFE in the tumbling portion. They should NOT be attempting something they have not perfected already. • Coaches will NOT spot cheerleaders for liability reasons during tryouts. • Other cheerleaders will not be allowed to spot during tryouts.

Pre-participation Physical Evaluation Form (2-sided) **If this is already on file for another athletic group at the school, please obtain a copy from your coach or the trainer and include in this packet. • 5. Activity Permission Form 7. Student and Parent Agreement to Cheerleader Regulations and Guidelines • 8. Copy of candidate’s 1st semester report card • 9. Handbook acknowledgement

  12. What happens Next? • If your daughter or son makes the Varsity team, there will be a meeting for THEM in Coach Thibodeaux’s room (L213) after school the WEDNESDAY (3/19) we get back from spring break. • At 6 pm the same night, Wednesday March 19th is the parent meeting (JV and Varsity) in room L213. Your 1st deposit is due this night. • On Tuesday, March 25th cheerleaders will be fitted for uniforms. All parents need to attend to sign off on uniform sizes. Varsity cheerleaders will fit at 6:00, Junior Varsity will fit at 6:30 in L213.
