What is the Campaign? • A national challenge to encourage Americans to change the world, one light, one step, at a time. • Asks individuals to change incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent ones (CFLs). • Change a Light Pledge and Change a Light Day are at the heart of the campaign. • 8th Year – Sponsored by EPA and DOE

Why Join the Campaign? $ • Direct benefits • Reduce energy use • Save money on energy costs • Reduce greenhouse gases and global warming • If all households in the US changed just one light, the combined impacts would: • Save 5.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. • Save $526 million. • Reduce 8.9 billion pounds of carbon dioxide – like removing 780 thousand cars from our roadways. $

Why Join the Campaign? • Indirect benefits • Raises awareness of global warming and climate change. • Protects energy resources and the environment. • Focuses on how individuals can really make a difference to reduce the risks of global warming and save energy. • Demonstrates your agency’s commitment to taking action. • Promotes partnerships/collaborations with local businesses, energy companies, schools, local governments.

Getting Started • Campaign is ongoing – you can join anytime. • NH focuses our efforts around Change a Light Day. • First Wednesday in October (October 3, 2007) • Concentrated efforts September-October • Try to include ways to provide CFLs to people easily and cost-effectively. • Be prepared to address recycling issues (mercury content).

Outreach Ideas and MaterialsNH State Agencies • Our goal: 1,000 pledges (out of 10,000 state employees). • Displays and Bulb Sales at 4 different state agency locations, plus the State House. • Partnered with EPA Energy Star contractor and NH Utilities to sell bulbs with rebates (through systems benefits charge). • Publicized events through state agency energy coordinators, emails, bulletin board postings.

Make Your Next Light AnENERGY STAR Celebrate Change a Light Day on October 4th Change a Light Change the World Take the Pledge today to change at least one light in your home to an ENERGY STAR qualified one. If every household in New Hampshire changed just one light to an ENERGY STAR light, it would be the equivalent of taking 3,000 cars off the road! • ENERGY STAR Lighting Products: • Use 2/3 less energy. • Save at least $25 each over their lifetime in energy costs. • Last 6 to 10 times longer than standard bulbs. • Generate 70 percent less heat than incandescent lighting. • Help prevent greenhouse gas emissions. www.energystar.gov/changealight
