  2. History • He was born in 1868 in Massachusetts to a free father and mother • He was strong academically and believed education would be the answer to poverty- he was the first African American to receive PhD from Harvard. • He founded NAACP • He argued that all racial segregation was bad because all black institutions could help black people and weren’t inferior • He was a member of the American Labor Party and Communist Party USA. He also admired Stalin, and was investigated as a socialist because of his writings • He died in 1963 as a citizen of Ghana

Connection • Dubois believed education was the answer to the advancement of colored people- IM went Tuskegee to better himself • IM joined the Communist Party because they were championing civil rights- Dubois was a member and ran on the American Labor Party ticket for senate • Dubois wrote many books educating about the black condition- IM gave speeches to help the black community • Ellison never talks about Dubois in IM but Dubois did much for black people and is listed in Molefi Kete Asante’s 100 Greatest African Americans
