  2. Joints? • They are functional unions between two or more bones • A.k.a.— articulations

  3. 3 Types of Joints • Fibrous joint – found between joints that closely contact one another; connected with a dense, fibrous tissue Ex: sutures between bones in the skull Least movable joint

  4. 3 Types of Joints • Cartilaginous joint– connected entirely by cartilage. Ex: Vertebral discs and pubic symphysis Somewhat movable joint

  5. 3 Types of Joints • Synovial joint– joins that allow free movement; may contain menisci or bursa sacs Very movable joint Meniscus- flattened, shock-absorbing pad of cartilage Bursa sac- fluid-filled sacs which aid in smooth movement

  6. 6 Synovial Joints • Ball-and-socket—ex: shoulder • Condyloid—ex: metacarpals and phalanges • Gliding—ex: carpals • Hinge—ex: elbow • Pivot—ex: atlas and axis vertebra (head movement) • Saddle—ex: thumb

  7. Define the following: • Flexion • Extension • Hyperextension • Abduction • Adduction • Rotation • Pronation • Supination
