  2. About the Northern Colorado Common Read • The Common Read is community-wide reading initiative designed to bring people of all ages and from various libraries together to read, discuss and celebrate a single book. • This year's selected book is Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. • Participating libraries include: • Aims Community College • Berthoud Community Library District • Boulder Public Library • Clearview Library District • High Plains Library District • Sterling Public Library • Westminster Public Library

  3. About the Book • Unbroken tells the remarkable true life story of Louis Zamperini, a U.S. Olympic athlete and WWII B-24 bombardier. • In boyhood, Zamperini was a cunning and incorrigible delinquent. Then during his teen years, he channeled his defiance into running . This talent led him to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. • When World War II started, the athlete joined the US Army Air Forces, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

  4. About the Author • Laura Hillenbrand spent seven years meticulously researching, reporting, and writing Louis Zamperini’s story, all while essentially confined to her home due to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Unbroken was published in 2010. • In October 2011, author & her subject met for their first and only face-to-face meeting, when Zamperini (aged 94) traveled to Hillenbrand’s home in Washington, DC. • Hillenbrand has also written Seabiscuit: An American Legend.
