  2. exorcise (verb) • to drive out by magic • to dispose of something troublesome

  3. condone (verb) • to overlook, turn a blind eye to • I don’t condone churlish behavior.

  4. cherubic (adj) • angelic • sweet and innocent • My daughters’ cherubic faces always make me smile!

  5. fabricate (verb) • to make up • Dally fabricated a story about Pony and Johnny going to Texas, so the police wouldn’t find them.

  6. dissent (verb, noun) • verb- to differ or dispute • Many tea party members dissented from the Republican party. • Many people voice their dissent in editorials. • noun- disagreement

  7. terminate (verb) • to bring to an end • If you don’t go to work, your employment may be terminated. • “I’ll be back!”

  8. altercation (noun) • an angry argument • Pony and Darry got into an altercation, so Pony ran away.

  9. obesity (noun) • severely overweight • The Biggest Loser tries to combat obesity.

  10. semblance (noun) • a likeness in outward appearance, especially when the reality is different • an aura • Michael Scott tried to maintain a semblance of authority when running the office.

  11. adherent (noun, adj) • noun- a follower, supporter • adjective- attached, sticking fast to an object or surface • The Bengals’ loyal adherents never give up hope that they will win. • the adherent plastic wrap was difficult to remove.

  12. abridge (verb) • to make shorter • Apparition abridges the time needed to travel for Harry and his friends. • adjective- An abridged version of the text is available.

  13. marauder (noun) • a raider, pirate • Captain Hook is an infamous marauder.

  14. pilfer (verb) • to steal in small quantities • The employee had been pilfering small amounts of money from the safe for months before he was caught.

  15. surmount (verb) • overcome • The Bengals have been able to surmount the obstacles they faced preseason, and now have a winning record.

  16. usurp (verb) • to seize illegally, commandeer • Scar usurped control of the Pride Lands from Mufasa in The Lion King.

  17. eminent (adj) • famous, outstanding • Eminem is an eminent hip hop artist.

  18. irate (adjective) • angry • Darry was irate when Pony came home late. (I’m a poet, and I didn’t know it!)

  19. pauper (noun) • An extremely poor person • Aladdin was a pauper before he met Genie.

  20. rift (noun) • a breach, a split • Constant arguments can cause a rift between friends.

  21. trite (adjective) • overused • “I know it may sound trite, but I’ve seen the light!”
