  1. 2012-2o13 autobiography

  2. What is an autobiography? • A written expression of your life.

  3. Past Years • 5-6 chapters • All chapters were narrative writing. • The project was finished in about a month, usually before the holidays.

  4. This Year • Basic layout, number of chapters, and focus on writing remains the same. • However, there will be a bigger focus on different types of writing. • The project will be stretched out of the remainder of the year. • Project chapters will be turned in as final copies upon completion individually, as well as at the end.

  5. Project is typically worth 100-200 pts. • About half of it is from your writing efforts, and half of it is from creativity, organization and overall project style. • I only have one sample in my classroom. It is about 10 years old. While there is some good writing in it, and it is put together pretty well, don't expect it to model everything correctly.

  6. What are those chapters?

  7. Grade school Years • Focus is developing a thesis, and sticking to it with stories, examples, and details. • It will be the first writing we do in class. • November writing.

  8. Heritage / History • You will be required to interview a family member. • You will have different options to choose from, but should remain on the topic that you choose. • A focus here is retooling, summarizing, and paraphrasing facts. • A family tree is a separate part of this chapter. • It will be completed in December.

  9. Holiday Memory • A new chapter this year. • Focus will be on telling a story that you remember.

  10. Birth-kindergarten Years • This writing will largely rely on some input from older family members. • Organization and summarizing of facts will be key. • It will take place in January.

  11. Future • Your future chapter involves some research. Choose a career you are interested in. • Focus here will be writing an argumentative paper that explains why or why you don't think that is for you. • This chapter will also involve some goal setting.

  12. Junior high • As your junior high year winds down, your last chapter will involve highlights from your last two years. • Choices may involve things other than writing. Details to follow at a later date.

  13. Tips for completing a successful project • Save, save, save, and back things up. • Pay attention to deadlines. • Be creative in 'extras' when the time comes. • Work on things little by little. • Follow directions and use edit time in class for your best writing. • Designate a place for autobiography 'stuff'. • Expect consequences for missing chapters along the way....my way of keeping you on track. • Don't compare to past year's chapters....pay attention to details for this y ear!
