  1. LTEC Update June 2017

  2. LTEC Key Activities • Assessment • Blended Learning • HEA Fellowships • Aptitude Testing • Moderation and Module Maintenance • SALT Conference • EG-353 • Virtual Reality

  3. Blended Learning The term ‘Blended Learning’ refers to the use of appropriate learning technologies to complement, support and enhance traditional face-to-face learning methods.

  4. Blended Learning in the CoE • Paul Holland in EG-155 and EG-255 Circuit Analysis for some time with significant success. • MeghdadFazeli in EGLM05 Advanced Power Systems to improve understanding of challenging topics. • Rhian Kerton in EG-262 Stress Analysis 1 and EG-294 Airframe Structures to offer students additional practice at tutorial questions and has reduced contact hours from 3 hrs/week to 2hrs/week. • Aaron Goodfellow has been working with Rajesh to produce content to support EG-261, EG-324 and EGM37.

  5. Blended Learning in the CoE • Ben Evans in EGA302A Aerospace Design II.  All theoretical content has been delivered using ‘e-lectures’.  Ben thinks it has worked well and freed up more time for him to spend face-to-face with the design groups.   • Ben Evans and Ken Morgan will be using e-lectures to deliver all of the worked examples for EGM90 Advanced Aerodynamics. • Ken Morgan has reduced contact hours from 3hrs/week to 2hrs/week on EGIM04 Advanced Fluid Mechanics. He has made available around 3 videos per week in which he solves specific examples.

  6. Blended Learning in the CoE • Cris Arnold has recorded some worked exam question solutions. He used the WACOM and microphone, using OneNote as a template (importing the question text, diagrams and equations as needed and then writing in the spaces between). He then uploaded these to Youtube and found that the significant majority of students engaged. He also used the WACOM to help with linked examples classes to Coleg Cambria. • Gavin Bunting  has used Camtasia to record and edit all of his lectures. This has worked well with good feedback from students.

  7. Blended Learning in the CoE • Hamed has introduced video tutorials into EG-260 Dynamics 1 for all example sheets. • Alison Williams is using Camtasia to record notes for the MATLAB component of EG-062 to respond to feedback from last year and plans to use the Wacom tablet to record additional worked examples for the EG-083/EG-188 maths module. • Zoran Jelic has integrated online preparation quizzes and developed video instructions for wind tunnel experiment with Andy Tappenden and Liam Cotton. • And many more…..

  8. Blended Learning in the CoE • College strategy to extend the use of Blended Learning to enhance the learning and teaching provision, cope with increasing student numbers and increase flexibility • Budget allocated to support academic staff in developing BL materials • 16 modules selected • Demonstrators to work alongside academic staff to develop BL content • University level strategy to roll out BL

  9. HEA Fellowship • Swansea Application Route (SAR) • Mandatory support programme introduced • Remaining 2017 submission deadlines: • Monday 31st July 2017 • Friday 13th October 2017

  10. HEA Fellowship • Promotion requirement on teaching enhanced career path • CPD - become a SAR mentor and/or assessor as part of continued commitment to HEA • Access to resources and events

  11. HEA Fellowship • University level ambitious trajectory • Currently 27% attainment (2017 target of 50%!) • TEF?

  12. HEA Fellowship

  13. HEA Fellowship • James Titiloye • ChedlyTizaoui • James Watkins • Clare Wood • YunqingXuan • Xiaojun(Ping) Yin Senior Fellows • Paul Holland • Joanne Hudson • Antonio Gil • Michael Lewis • Ian Masters • Andrew Rees • Yon Ju-Nam • Harshinie Karunarathna • Rhian Kerton • Camilla Knight • Robert Lancaster • Paul Ledger • Kelly Mackintosh • Laura Mason • MelittaMcNarry • David Moody • Darren Oatley-Radcliffe • Jesus Ojeda Ledo • Dominic Reeve • Bjorn Sandnes • Ruben Sevilla Associate Fellows • HefinApLlywdDafydd • FawziBelblidia Fellows • Matthew Barrow • Paolo Bertoncello • Neil Bezodis • Gavin Bunting • Richard Cobley • DavideDeganello • Charlie Dunnill • Ben Evans • MeghdadFazeli

  14. Aptitude Testing • Induction week diagnostic tests in English and Mathswere introduced in 2016/2017: • driven by poor English levels and concern over number of students failing EG-189 and EG-190 • Poor performance in Maths→ encouraged to attend Maths Café • Poor performance in English → enrolled on a non-credit bearing English for Engineers module delivered by ASP

  15. Aptitude Testing • Data yet to be analyzed to link impact of intervention on student marks • Some challenges encountered: • Students felt ‘ambushed’ during induction week • Attendance drop-off in English classes when students realised there was no real penalty for not attending… • Students felt that sessions were a ‘punishment’ and having already attained level of English required to enrol, they did not feel that these sessions should be compulsory

  16. Aptitude Testing • Proposal for 2017/2018 academic session: • Embed English aptitude test into EG-168 • Formative test in 1st week, summative test at end • Offered as optional ‘English Excellence’ sessions • Focus not only on English as a second language, some sessions suitable for all students, such as technical writing • Reinforce that these are an additional opportunity for those wishing to improve their English, and is a benefit not offered by many other universities (students should realise how lucky they are!)

  17. Aptitude Testing • Recognized problem with the ability of graduates to produce high standard written work…. • Recommendation that spelling and grammar should form part of the assessment criteria for all written assignments, lab reports, essays… • Team (led by Patricia) will consult and advise on this shortly

  18. Moderation and Module Maintenance • Moderation template/forms improved to include questions relating to moderation type and module learning outcomes • Sports Science to pilot new forms during the summer to highlight any potential pros/cons prior to wider circulation • Module Maintenance How-to-Guide in preparation

  19. SALT Conference • 5th July 2017 • 7 proposals accepted from CoE • 1 hour Workshops: • Lightboard Studio: A facility for recording or live broadcasting interactive video lectures – Karin Ennser • How Virtual Reality can enhance real-life learning and teaching – Marc Holmes • Promoting Interaction and Efficiency in Group Work – Patricia Xavier

  20. SALT Conference • Presentations: • Flipped, Authentic and Quick Marked Labs – Paul Holland • Reverse Engineering as a tool for teaching Aerospace Design – Zoran Jelic • OneNote Classroom Notebook – your new VLE? – Chris Jobling • Lightning Talk: • Teaching Excellent in HE: Creating perturbations in dynamic student/lecturer interactions – Jo Hudson

  21. EG-353 • Big driver for student satisfaction • Drive to maximize student satisfaction: • Align expectations • Focus groups (allocation criteria) • Co-creation, student involvement • >90 student defined projects • YII • Industry linked projects

  22. EG-353 • List of staff defined projects finalized this week • New ‘sanity check’ of titles • Transparent process and deadlines • Allocation according to 2nd year GPA • Phase 1 and Phase 2 • Inform students even earlier next year in response to focus group feedback… guide students in process of defining own projects, showcase current project students…

  23. Virtual Reality • Marc Holmes is the CoE VR guru…. • Number of non-teaching related VR activities ongoing • On the teaching side: • Submission for CATE Award • Submission for Reimagine Education Award • Workshop at SALT conference • SALT Small Project Grant for VR Anatomy App

  24. SALT Small Project Grant Virtual Reality Anatomy App: • SR113 Human NeuromusculoskeletalSystem and SR141 Human Anatomy • User is required to build a skeleton • If the bone is placed correctly, it becomes highlighted and can be dropped into place • Bones are named • Time to completion

  25. SALT Small Project Grant • Pilot data has been collected including a test to evaluate learning following use of the platform • Full evaluation of effectiveness during TB1 teaching block • This stage of the project to be completed by Feb/March 2018 ready for dissemination • Improving the platform based on user feedback, addition of more functionality

  26. Virtual Reality CoE strategy to increase VR knowledge and expertise base by enabling academic staff: • Call for expressions of interest from academics wishing to introduce some VR content into their teaching (deadline tomorrow!) • 6 selected staff members will be provided with VR hardware (PC, VR headset etc), software, support and training to allow them to develop VR content • VR kit to be made available for learning and teaching
