Intent of Educational Value Unit Initiative • Support teaching and student learning outcomes. • Encourage and support faculty in their roles. • Reward excellence in teaching and curricular innovation. • Develop a comprehensive educational model that will ensure that faculty contributions to the educational programs are acknowledged and that resources are appropriately allocated to support that effort. • Recommend a methodology for the allocation of State resources to support educational effort.

Phase One • Phase I – through June 30, 2009: • Convene EVU workgroups (UME, GME, Graduate Studies) • Establish Guiding Principles • Identify Major and Other Essential Teaching Assignments • Develop Metrics to Allocate Resources for Major Educational Assignments • Work with GME and Graduate Studies to Align Guidelines and Metrics (where appropriate) • Initiate Development of Data Management System: Course Specific; populated by Course/Clerkship Directors and other Leaders • Gather input from Chairs and faculty throughout process. Phase One Milestones • Identified key teaching and administrative roles essential to the educational programs. • Town hall meetings with faculty were held in June and July to gather faculty feedback on educational roles. • Finalized roles for UME, GME and Graduate Studies. • Pilot data capture to include all required UME courses and clerkships and all Graduate Studies courses, successfully conducted in October. • Production of departmental and faculty reports. • On-line database to gather data in the future begun and is scheduled to be ready to use for the next major data capture in 2010.

Next Phases of Educational Value Units for MD Program Phase II: July 1, 2009 through Jun 30, 2010 • Develop Metrics and Processes for Assessing Educational Excellence in Collaboration with Faculty • Use Metrics to Assess Faculty Performance and Reward Excellence • Propose Bonus and Incentive Structure for Educational Excellence • Annually Review Teaching Assignments and Allocation of Resources for Appropriateness and Accuracy • Create Professional Development Infrastructure to Support Faculty Success Phase III: July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011 • Refine Bonus and Incentive Structure • Work with Major Affiliates to acknowledge Teaching Efforts of Their Faculty • Create Educational Leadership Institute to support Master Teachers Information Input Shared Vision
