Spectrometer Solenoid Update MICE Video Conference #139 April 14, 2011 Steve Virostek - LBNL
Topics • Manpower • Technical progress • - Vacuum vessel FEA • - Vent/fill lines • - Instrumentation • - Shield material • Quench analysis • Workshop
Manpower Update • Roy Preece • - now at LBNL and Wang NMR for one year • - will help with assembly oversight and tracking • Dean Sorensen • - cryotech retired from Fermilab • - consulting contract now in place • Pan Heng • - postdoc hired by LBNL • - assisting Soren Prestemon with quench analysis • Dennis Callais • - LBNL cryotech now working at Wang NMR 3 days/week • - currently working on instrumentation plan and hardware • Tapio Niinikoski – cryo engineer returning to LBNL 4/25 • John Joseph – LBNL EE assisting with power supplies
Technical Progress • Vacuum vessel FEA • - Model built by A. DeMello to assess design modifications • - Existing vacuum vessel is sufficient w/larger cooler cutout • - Tower material thickness to be increased to1/2” from 3/8” • Instrumentation • - Final plan for instrumentation locations and types • - Additional sensors to be ordered soon • Vent/fill lines • - Design details being discussed with vendor • - modified design eliminates direct shine and allows top off • Shield material • - 1100 aluminum material ordered last week • - both shields to be remade completely
Quench Analysis Update • Quench analyses being completed by Soren Prestemon (LBNL)and Vladimir Kashikhin (FNAL) • Sensitivity studies for quench analysis are being carried out by new LBNL postdoc Pan Heng • Soren Prestemon met w/Vladimir Kashikhin on 3/16 to discuss their results for the quench analysis; ongoing correspondence carried out by phone and e-mail • Discussions under way with Wang NMR regarding the quench analysis and power supplies • A concept to conductively cool the quench resistors is under development
Spectrometer Solenoid Workshop • A Spectrometer Solenoid workshop is being organized by Steve Gourlay, LBNL AFRD Division Director • Workshop to be held at LBNL on May 10th & 11th • The two-day workshop will be used to discuss and finalize the plan for the reassembly of the Spectrometer Solenoids • Final plan to be presented to MICE and MAP • Schedule for reassembly to be updated when overall plan has been completed
