  1. The Diary of Anne Frank Anne Frank, 1947

  2. Anne Frank • Anne Frank was a young Jewish Dutch teenager who lived during World War II • Originally from Germany, she lived in Amsterdam (Holland) during the war • When Germany invaded Holland she lived in a secret hidden ‘annex’ in a house with her family • The hidden annex (or ‘room’) was meant to hide the family from being caught by the Germans • If caught, they feared being sent to a labour camp (or ‘death camp’) like Auschwitz

  3. The house • The house is located in the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam

  4. The secret door • The secret door is the gateway to the hidden annex

  5. The annex • This plan shows exactly what was behind the secret door

  6. The Diary • Whilst living in the annex, Anne Frank (then aged 13) kept a diary of her time living there • The original title of the book is ‘The Diary of a Young Girl’ • The diary was written between 14 June 1942 – 1 August 1944 • It tells of her thoughts and feelings of her time in the annex, fears of the war and being caught and details the relationships with her family • The diary also expresses personal details of being a teenager and the difficulties of going through teen angst in such an unusual situation

  7. The end • The diary ends on 1 August 1944. • Unfortunately someone (still unknown) tipped the Germans off about the secret room • The family were all arrested on 4 August 1944 and Anne Frank was eventually sent to Auschwitz with members of her family • Anne eventually died of typhus in Auschwitz, aged 15 • Tragically, her death came just a few weeks before British troops liberated Auschwitz (and she could have been saved) • Her diary was discovered and was published soon after the war
