  3. 24th Amendment • Definition-Declares poll taxes in State and Federal elections unconstitutional. • How does the term apply to U.S. Government? The Twenty-Fourth Amendment affects the U.S. government because free elections allows all citizens, poor and rich to participate equally in elections. Equal participation provides more stable checks and balances in the government. • Ex: Many Southern states started a poll tax in the late 1800’s for the purpose of preventing poor whites and blacks to vote. Often times, the poll tax was compounded, meaning the price of voting would rise based on the number of times a citizen has voted.

  7. 26th Amendment • Definition-Lowered the legal voting age to eighteen for national and state elections. • How does it apply to U.S. Government? This applies to the U.S. because elections now impacted the people the age of eighteen that became part of a new political demographic. Propaganda increased towards influencing young people to vote. • Ex: The minimum voting age of eighteen was set during the Vietnam war when eighteen year old men protested the draft since they could not vote. The Amendment was ratified in 1971.

  9. 27th Amendment • Definition-Prohibits any law that increases or decreases the salary of members of Congress from taking effect until the next set of terms of office for Representatives. • How does it apply to U.S. Government? Members of Congress are less corrupt when they are voting for members of the following Congress a wage increase. • Ex: Congressional Members vote for a pay raise for the next Congress.

Delegated Powers • Powers designated and authorized by the Federal government to a lower authority. • How does it apply to U.S. Government? • This applies to the class because the Government is reliant on Federal agencies which it delegates to perform duties. • Ex: The powers of the FDA (Food and Drug Association) were designated under the 1906 Food and Drugs Act by the legislative branch.
