  3. What is the DepthQ® Polarization Modulator? DepthQ® is a sophisticated electronic switch that allows your audience to view 3D movies using low-cost polarized glasses.   26. With today’s projector technology, slow Pi-cell switching can cause excess ghosting. Their problem: Old Pi-cell technology requires ~500µs to fully change states In an effort to keep 3D as bright as possible, digital cinema projector ‘Dark Time’ with Pi-cells is often set as short as currently possible: about 350µs This means projectors can switch eyes before Pi-cells finish switching state, allowing excess ghosting Pi-Cell switch time exceeds typical Pi-cell Dark Time - You choose between extra ghost or dimmer image DepthQ®switches well within typical Dark Time – No chance of excess ghosting.

  27. In the future, if projector Dark Times are reduced below 350µs, DepthQ® will allow even brighter images. How? Dark Times are used to hide state changes from Left Eye to Right Eye and back Overall projector brightness is diminished by Dark Times The smaller the Dark Time, the brighter the final image At 50µs, DepthQ® potential Dark Time is almost inconsequential: Less than 1% of a frame (.72%) at today’s 144FPS speeds.

  28. In the near future, projector manufacturers will begin to adopt new High Frame Rates (HFR). DepthQ® is more than ready. What’s driving faster 3D projectors? Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy was shot at 48 frames per second (FPS) James Cameron’s Avatar prequels will likely be shot at 60FPS This will require high-end projectors to jump to 192FPS for 3D, and potentially 240FPS With the world’s fastest switching speed, DepthQ® is already capable of 400FPS.

  29. DepthQ®’s 50µs fast switching is even more important in conjunction with High Frame Rate movies/projectors. Why? At 192FPS DepthQ® will only require .96% of a frame for Dark Time At 240FPS DepthQ® will only require 1.2% of a frame for Dark Time Pi-cells will consume 10-12% of your projectors’ light in Dark Time.

  30. Competitive products use plastic linear polarization elements. DepthQ® uses nano-scale metal on glass to ensure longevity. Why? Powerful lamps in digital cinema projectors create infra-red (thermal) energy which projector manufacturers filter in varying amounts. Thermal heating can melt, warp and degrade the plastic linear element of any circular polarization modulator over time.
