  1. Last Breath  Mimi Pratt

  2. What is the film about? How do we know? • The film has something to do with the end of a drug operation. A conflict rises as money is discussed and one of the leaders wants more of the shares.  • We know they are at the end of the operation as they talk about shipping the unnamed product off, which we can assume is drugs, and splitting ways afterwards. One of the actors quotes "I cant believe we managed to pull this off"  • Towards the end of the sequence the characters hear a noise and the room they are in is invaded by a SWAT team. The screen turns black as we hear gunshot noises, assuming the leaders have been shot and the two SWAT team members walk out at the end with a trolley of drugs.

  3. How does the opening sequence build tension? What methods have the film makers used to create this tension? • The music creates tension and adds suspense.  • The disagreement causes tension as the actors rise up and the camera moves to focus just on the leaders.  • The blackout leaves the audience open to interpretation and intrigues them to watch more.  • The film makers used a loud bang when the door is kicked open by the SWAT members this happened to make it a powerful moment. •   The camera shot goes through the wall from the leaders to the SWAT members. It zooms out the audiences focus on the leaders and zooms in on the SWAT members.

  4. Who are the Characters?  The opening sequence of, "the last breath," seems to revolve around a sort of drug operation run by two leaders. Ollie Gray seems to have more power, in the operation, than the other; as we see Boss's character try to take more of the profits from their deals than Declan Boss character. The two get into a heated fight about the money which ends up giving away their position to the SWAT team outside the door, ready to arrest or kill them. From just the opening sequence, I think it's open to interpretation whether the drug dealers' criminal lifestyles are the main focus of this film, or whether the focus will be on the SWAT/police team.

  5. What are we meant to feel about the characters and why do we feel this so early on? • As an audience, we are supposed to feel threatened or uneasy by the two men as they start to fight which creates large amounts of tension for the audience, especially as we already know these men are very dangerous people.  • We may also feel worried for them as already, there is a use of dramatic irony in the opening of the film. This means that as an audience we become even more tense and possibly concerned for the characters as we know that they are in immediate danger, with the SWAT team just outside the door.

  6. What do you think, given the tone and language, the rest of the plot line would be? • Given the tone and action that occurred in the short film my group believe the SWAT officers breached the drug room and two shots were fired. As the screen goes black at this point the plot line is open to the audience's interpretation. We see that two men in uniform leave the room however, the masks cover their identity. The story could go either of two ways; 1. The SWAT team killed the two drug dealers and the story switches to a second protagonist, possibly a friend of college ; 2. The two men killed the SWAT team in the black out and this is how they planned to escape, by wearing their uniforms and walking out with their drugs.

  7. Aspects which you think are good/ bad in terms of quality • In general, the short film was filled with very good camera shots and angles. One of our favourites was this one. We can see one character talking to the other In the background, but in the foreground we can see the other characters side profile. This is an exceptionally brilliant shot as it shows the characters view point from inside the room, allowing the viewers to look at the set whilst maintaining attention on the important dialogue that is taking place  • Another shot we found interesting was this one. It's a close up shot on a small action which we thought twas a good shot to include as it shows us what operation the two drug leaders are running as well as adding more story and detail to the plot line and scene. It's also the last shot from inside the room before we pan out to the SWAT team outside the door which surprised us as we didn't expect to move focus from the drugs inside of the room to the SWAT outside.
