  1. Water Pollution

  2. As the French Broad River enters Henderson Co., it is rated “good.” The rating drops to “poor” by the time it leaves Buncombe County. Why?

  3. Development

  4. Zinc from tires

  5. Runoff from urban areas

  6. Eutrophication • Definition: the over-enrichment of water bodies • Contributors: excessive Nitrogen and Phosphorus • Process: excess N and P fuel growth of aquatic plants. As these plants are broken down, bacteria and other organisms respire. This respiration takes up oxygen and produces carbon dioxide. In severe cases, this can lead to fish kills. • There are hundreds of dead zones throughout the world, brought on by eutrophication

  7. Reducing Water Pollution I. The Clean Water Act of 1972 • Seeks to make all surface waters fishable and swimmable • Regulates point sources of pollution by requiring permits • Has made a huge difference in improving water quality in the US over the last 35 years II. The Safe Drinking Water Act • Set up uniform federal standards for drinking water • Protects the quality of Asheville’s water

  8. Point Source Pollution is fairly well regulated in the US

  9. An Exception: CAFO’s

  10. Ideas to reduce water pollution • Keep cattle from creeks through incentives • Regulate manure spreading • Encourage composting of manure • Regulate construction sites • Install more riparian buffers • Encourage more green space in city • Install rain gardens, esp. in parking lots • Regulate development on steep slopes • State-wide bottle bill • Fast food take-out tax • Regulate plastic bags • MORE!
