  1. Anatomy Male Reproductive System

  2. NOTES – THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • The Male Reproductive System • contains testes – hangs outside body to regulate temperature • Scrotum • smooth muscle can raise or lower it

  3. Testes • contain seminiferous tubules – sperm develops here • interstitial cells surround tubules – secrete testosterone (male hormone)

  4. Spermatogenesis • formation of sperm cells

  5. Germ cells near the outer wall of the seminiferous tubules of the testis differentiate into stem cells called spermatogonia. • Spermatogonia

  6. Primary Spermatocyte • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) during puberty causes production of this cell • this cell undergoes meiosis

  7. gamete formed by this process – ½ the number of chromosomes • Spermatids

  8. Here is a microscopic view of the seminiferous tubules – notice the location of each cell, from the edge of the tube moving toward the center

  9. Mature Sperm • ultimate result is a sperm cell with a head, midpiece and tail

  10. Ducts • Epididymis • maturation & storage of sperm • located above and behind the testicle

  11. Ductus (vas) deferens • carries sperm from the epididymis to the urethra

  12. Urethra • extends from bladder to distal end of the penis

  13. Penis • composed of 3 columns of erectile tissue – delivers sperm to female • Corpora Cavernosa • 2 dorsal columns • ventral column – also forms the glans penis • Corpus Spongiosum • Prepuce (foreskin) • circumcision: removal of prepuce

  14. Glands • add nutrients to semen • Seminal vesicles

  15. Prostate gland • provide proper pH for sperm

  16. Bulbourethral Gland or Cowper’s Gland • lubricate urethra

  17. Secretions • Semen • mixture of sperm and secretions from glands • Ejaculation • forceful expulsion of semen from urethra (smooth and skeletal muscles)
