  4. Eligibility & Standards Under review

  5. Eligibility • was established in 1971 • presented annually to the illustrator of an outstanding (English language) children's book published during the previous calendar year • the illustrator must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada

  6. Standards Governing Selection • In making this award, illustration will be the prime consideration of the committee • The total design of the book is an integral part of its merit and also of importance in consideration • Illustration meriting the award will be creative art works, appealing to and intended for children (up to and including age 12)

  7. Standards • Illustration meriting the award must effectively communicate the artist’s interpretation of the story and must complement the text where there is one • Artistic worth should be judged on the basis of color, line, composition, perspective, action and narrative quality, characterization and medium use

  9. The Process • call for submissions, early Fall 2011 • 102 books received • eligibility issues reduced that number slightly • Members each annotated a list of their Top 10 books • Top Ten : 33 titles! • teleconference, reduced our list to 15 • ranked those 15 to get a short list of 10 titles

From Ten to Three • Each jury member ranked the ten titles on the short list • Teleconference • Reduced the list to 4 books • Rankings and additional annotations • First & second choices and third & fourth choices separated by one point! • FINALLY, we could announce a winner and 2 honour books
