  1. East Campus Educational Center Welcome to INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL “Where students come first and second chances come true.”

  2. This presentation… …is designed to inform you about the procedures and expectations for students enrolled in IHS. • At the conclusion of this presentation, you will be asked to take a short assessment. • If you have any questions or concerns, an administrator will be available.

  3. The Master Agreement…. • Enrollment in Independence High School is governed by a contract between the school, the parent/guardian and the student, called the Master Agreement. • This agreement includes • the student’s academic classes, • credits to be earned and • expectations for completion. The detailed expectations of student and parent/guardian are identified on Page 2 of the Master Agreement which was included in the orientation packet.

SAFETY is Important to all of us at IHS! • The Zero Tolerance Policy • No RED or BLUE colors • No drugs • No weapons • No inappropriate behavior • Campus Liaisons are on duty throughout the day to maintain a safe and secure environment for all students • Video surveillance cameras are located on the campus

  5. Zero Tolerance PolicyAgreement withthis policy is REQUIRED for enrollment in Independent Studies. Any of the following may result in expulsion from the district and removal from IHS. • Cause serious physical injury to another person except in self defense • The possession of any knife, explosive or other dangerous object of no reasonable use to the student • Unlawful possession of any controlled substance • Commit robbery or extortion • Assault or battery upon a school employee • Possessing, selling, or otherwise furnishing a firearm • Brandishing a knife at another person • Unlawfully selling, negotiating to sell, possession with intent to sell, or furnishing a controlled substance (Ed Code 48900)

Students will also be removed from Independence High School on the first offense for any of the following: • Under the influence of or in possession of alcohol, drugs or look-alikes. • Possession of, or unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any drug paraphernalia. • Theft or attempted theft of any kind of school or private property or being in unlawful possession of the personal property of another. • Vandalism, tagging, causing or attempting to cause damage to any school or personal property. • Fire-setting, attempted fire-setting or bomb threat. • Causing, attempting to cause, or threatening to cause physical injury to another person. • Threatening, intimidating, and menacing another person. • Sexual harassment. • Other student misconduct/non-productivity deemed to be disruptive to the educational process.

INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL FULL-TIME IHS • 6 classes • 30 credits possible per semester ON-TRACK • Enrolled at their home site for 2-3 periods and • Enrolled in 4 courses through IHS TEEN MOMS (ECEC ONLY) • Enrolled in classes through the IHS program at ECEC • Additional classes/credits are earned through Teen Parent Program SUMMIT • Enrolled in up to 20 credits through the IHS program

Expectations for ALL IHS Students • Be on time! • It is the student’s responsibility to contact his/her teacher PRIOR to the scheduled meeting time, if he/she will be late or needs to request to reschedule an appointment for a valid reason • Complete your assigned work! • You will need to work independently at home each day • For each class identified on your contract, expect up to 25 hours of work to be completed at home each week • Bring your binder and ID to meetings • Stay on track toward graduation • This requires attendance and completing your work to earn full credit • Attend ALL required testing • Any required ELA and math assessments • District benchmark assessments • CAHSEE • STAR • CELDT

Expectations forParents/Guardians of IHS Students • Make sure that your child has a quiet place to study on a daily basis • Support your child with the work assigned • Check the weekly assignment sheet for assignment completion before your student’s appointment with his/her teacher • Call your child’s teacher, the IHS counselor or the IHS office if you have any questions or concerns

Earning credits at IHS…. • Attendance is mandatory. • There are NO excused absences • 2missed appointments may result in removal from the program • Students are required to attend their weekly appointments for a minimum of 1 hour. Additionally, some ECEC students must also attend weekly English and math support classes. Note:Failure to attend an IHS appointment is equivalent to missing 5 days at a traditional site. • To earn 5 credits, each student must: • complete approximately 16 assignments, and have an overall average grade of 60% or more on work completed, quizzes and exams

  11. IHS Graduation Requirements • Are the same as those required by all traditional sites in the MUHSD (these can be found in the Student/Parent Handbook) • Students must be prepared with the required amount of credits to be transferred back to the traditional campus

  12. IHS Rules and Regulations To be successful at IHS you must follow the rules and regulations that govern this program. These rules are determined by state and district policy. Not doing so can result in being screened out.

  13. You are now a student of IHS. • You should not be ON or NEAR any MUHSD school between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. • (unless you have a scheduled appointment, class or lab time) • While on campus, be aware that any idle, “off hand” comment that could be taken as a threat to any school staff, student or others will be taken seriously and handled as a dangerous incident. • Any student posing a perceived threat will be immediately removed from campus while investigation into the matter determines the most appropriate action.

  14. IHS Dress and Conduct Code School should be a positive and safe learning environment. Your clothes should reflect this! Use good judgment when choosing your outfits and follow our dress standards. Any dress, grooming, or conduct which disrupts or tends to disrupt the educational process, or affects the health or safety of individuals shall be prohibited.

  15. NO BLUE or RED will be allowed on any clothing or accessories of students attending IHS. This includes “light” or “dark shades” of blue or red. For example: NO Sky blue, baby blue, navy blue, maroon, crimson, burgundy, etc. The only exception is blue jeans.

  16. Inappropriate dress….. • Shorts, skirts, pants, and tops that fail to conceal undergarments. • Sagging pants • Backless or strapless tops • Bare midriffs • See through garments No red

  17. Inappropriate dress….. • Hats are allowed only if they are from one of the MUHSD campuses and are not red or blue.

  18. Inappropriate dress….. Yes, even shoes.

  19. Other expectations of IHS students…. • NO Loitering • Schools are Tobacco Free Site • IHS I.D. Cards are Required • NO electronic devices are to be used while on campus. This includes cell phones and I-Pods.

The IHS Student/Parent Handbook Your handbook includes information regarding: • Mission statements • Graduation requirements • IHS Academic Policies and Practices • Contact information, campus maps • ECEC Policies and Practices *Students will be held responsible for following the rules and expectations outlined in the handbook.

  21. Students: Your first IHS assignment! • This assignment is to be completed and brought to your first meeting with your IHS teacher. • The purpose of this assignment is for you to think about your goals and to share information with your IHS teacher. Take this seriously. You can earn 100% in each class for the first week. • The assignment involves writing, an interest survey, learning style inventory and information that will help your teacher to assist you in finding success in IHS.

  22. NEXT STEPS…. • IHS Students can expect to receive a call from their IHS teacher within the next two to three days. This will be the time to schedule their first appointment. Be sure to select a time you can keep each week. Parents are encouraged to attend the first meeting with their student’s teacher. • Students enrolling in the Teen Mother Program will start on Monday at 9:15 a.m. You must provide transportation to school on the first day. Afterwards, bus transportation will be available. • All IHS students will receive a first week’s assignment at the conclusion of this orientation.

  23. Don’t forget! When you come for your first IHS meeting with your teacher, bring your completed assignment….and your… • IHS binder • Books • Questions and concerns Be sure when you leave your first appointment that you have • your ID card and • a clear understanding of your assignments for the week.
