  4. Implementation • Spring 2010 • Two ESL sections: • ESL Level 5-6 (19 students) • ESL Level 5-6 (Control Group, 17 students, took the pre & post tests without the library and librarian visits) • One GED section (12 students)

  5. ESL-first visit • Pre-test given during regular class sessions • Library Visit: • Physical tour • Demo “ESL Resources” page: http://bit.ly/cbcesl • Hands-on

  6. ESL –second week • Classroom Visit: • Demo CultureGrams Database • Search for a PDF report and an image • Rename & save files to thumb drive • Copy & paste citations into Word and save • Post-test given during regular class sessions • Later students wrote report with sources

  7. GED –First visit • Pre-test given during regular class sessions • Library Visit: • Very Quick Physical tour & handout • Demo “GED Resources” page: http://bit.ly/cbcged • Hands-on time • Criteria of evaluating web pages

  8. GED-Second Week • Classroom Visit: • Web 2.0 • Privacy • Evaluation Assignment • Students posted comments on the “GED Resources” blog evaluating selected websites

  9. Lessons Learned • Use online survey to help data analysis • Some survey questions ambiguous • Simplify the assignment for GED • Need more time to work with students • Lots of collaborative possibilities

  10. Insights • Collaboratively-created resource pages: more useful • Faculty want students to learn: how to evaluate sources • Faculty want students to learn: how to cite sources • In-person tour is better than online • Essential: Students active learning time • Essential : Talking with discipline faculty and find out what they need & want

  11. Future Considerations Specifics: • Teach gmail to ESL students • Teach Google Docs to ESL students • Teach searching of public library catalog Overall: • Wish to continue the collaboration • Wish to start new collaborations with other departments too
