  1. ACS Polymer Chemistry Division symposium “The Polymer Science of Everyday Things” and K-12 Long Distance Workshop August 2004 ACS Meeting, Philadelphia, PADMR-0442718 Scientific Objective: A pioneering workshop / symposium combination brought current “hot topics” in polymer science to high school teachers (Saturday afternoon) and to both researchers, high school teachers, and their students on Sunday and Monday. The program included: • Saturday: Highly communicative scientists working with Polymer Ambassadors (specially trained high school teachers) presenting the essence of in-classroom experiment kits that were provided to insure immediate implementation • Sunday / Monday scientific presentations on topics such as “Chemistry and the Stradivarius" by J. Nagyvary” to an audience of high school teachers, their students, and ACS meeting attendees. Partial Listing of Symposium Presentations (Sun / Mon) • Chemistry and the Stradivarius • The Science of Drums • Reeds and Lips as Vibrators • Polymers and the Art of Communication • Polymers, Particles and Pits – Evolution of Recording Media

  2. ACS Polymer Chemistry Division symposium “The Polymer Science of Everyday Things” and K-12 Long Distance Workshop August 2004 ACS Meeting, Philadelphia, PADMR-0442718 Outreach: Education: • Symposium and workshop cosponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Polymer Chemistry Division, American Chemical Society • Workshop attended by 25 K-12 teachers in the Philadelphia area • Workshop Web-cast to the U. of Akron and the U. of Arizona; attended by 25 teachers at each off site location • Symposium attendance ranged from 100 – 150 • Financial sponsorship by the National Science Foundation and other sponsors gratefully acknowledged in posters and an official program.
