  2. ANALOGY • a comparison of two things Example: The Sun and the Moon are both located in the atmosphere.

  3. AUTHOR’S CRAFT • the style, tone and mood a writer uses to convey a message in writing Example: The author’s craft was very sad and disappointing

  4. DENOTATIVE MEANING • the dictionary meaning of the word Example: The kid at the Spelling Bee defined the word right out of the dictionary.

  5. DIALOGUE • the written conversation between two or more characters Example: The conversation in the story was very exciting.

  6. INFER • to "read between the lines" to understand and interpret the author's message Example: The student looked like he was texting in class.

  7. METAPHOR • a figurative comparison that does not use "like" or "as" Example: The dog was faster than a cheetah.

  8. PLOT • the action or events in a story Example: The sport of baseball was a very important event in the story.

  9. SEQUENCE • the order in which the events in a selection occur Example: The story was in order the way the events happened.

  10. SYMBOLISM • the use of a concrete object to represent an idea Example: The teddy-bear had blue pants with a red belt on.

  11. SIMILE • a figurative comparison that uses "like" or "as" Example: The sprinter was fast as a cheetah.
