School and Classroom Procedures • Students may expect the teachers to enforce all school policies including, but not limited to: • late homework penalty 10% per day up to 50% off • dress code violations • Enforcement/motivation? • Second recess • Dress code and behavior violations are now systematic and streamlined school-wide. • Class dojo
Classroom Dojo! Parents and students have the ability to log-in to Class Dojo and monitor progress.
Communication You can expect that we will: • Send a weekly, consolidated email via Ms. Rooney. • Maintain a 5th grade web page with the assignments from each class (homework calendar) • Maintain individual teacher web pages with more details, as necessary. • Update Gradelink regularly • Initiate contact if/when your child’s class behavior or academic performance is of concern. • Respond to emails within 1-2 school days.
Communication In turn, we expect that you will: • Refer to the website and weekly email for information, before asking for clarification. • Reach out directly to whichever teacher will be most able to resolve your concerns (rather than default to the homeroom teacher and/or administration). • Check gradelink regularly (you can set up alerts) • Partner with us in providing the best learning experience for your child.

Language Arts (10:10-11:40) Grouped to allow teachers to meet the needs and maximize the growth of every 5th grade student. Core Knowledge literature and language components, as well as informational texts that correlate with Social Studies. • Tom Sawyer, Little Women, Secret Garden • Don Quixote, Midsummer’s Night Dream • Native Americans, Maya, Aztec, Inca • Renaissance and Reformation
Math (12:30-1:30 pm) Groups and class sizes according to student needs. Students no longer need tocome home with the Saxon CD to download - Mr. Knudsen has posted both levels (Math 5 and Course 1) on his website! • Saxon Math components: • Facts practice and tests • mental math • problem solving • incremental learning • regular, repeated practice • Check for errors on homework
Typical Homework Schedule • Math Monday - Thursday (30 mins/night*) • Science Study regularly (10 mins/night*), plus 1-2 projects per term. • Social Studies Study regularly (10 mins/night*)1-2 projects per term. • Language ArtsSpelling, grammar, reading & writing as differentiated by teacher. (20 mins/night*) **These times are approximate, and may vary by child. Students have the final 40 minutes each day (2:50-3:30) to work on their homework with teacher help, as needed.
Homework Reminders (from BFA handbook) Absence policies: • Students are responsible for getting missed work and notes (use advisory time). • Two days given for each day missed. • No work pick up (drop in) during the school day. • Extended absence/vacations gather work upon return.
