  2. Where in the World? • The Iguazu National Park is in the province of Misiones, Argentina, on the border between Argentina and Brazil. • The park is placed on a natural fault line and is moved by tectonic plates. • Across the Iguazu River there is the Iguacu National Park, its Brazilian twin.

The Iguazu National Park is…. • The Iguazu National Park is a preserve in Argentina created on October 9, 1934. • It’s most famous feature is the Iguazu Falls. • The falls are surrounded by a subtropical rainforest. • The national park is 66,148 hectares and considered one of the 7 wonders of the world.

  4. The Iguazu National Park is… • The falls have about 275 cataracts. About 80 meters high and about 2,700 meters in diameter. (About 2 miles!!) • As the water falls, mist comes together and rises high into the air. The wind then takes the water and blows it over the forest, adding to it’s annual rainfall of 2,000 millimeters, feeding it’s already dense vegetation.

  5. Who made the Iguazu National Park a National Park? • The government of Argentina made Iguazu National park, a national park on October 9, 1934. • The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) made the Iguazu, part of the Natural Heritage of Humanity.

  6. How are National Parks Decided? • National Parks are areas of land that are owned by the government and declared to be set aside for human recreation and animal and environmental protection. • Iguazu was no exception, it was to protect the diverse biological species there.

  7. Why is the Iguazu National Park a ‘National Park”? • The Iguazu National Park is home to over 400 species of bird, 2,000 species of plants and a world of insects. • The reason it is a national park is to preserve the variety of biology in the rainforests. • It has trees between 15 and 40 meters high and 6 layers of vegetation. • Giant or Emerging Trees Stratum • Large trees Stratum • Middle Stratum • Intermediate Stratum • Bushy Stratum • Herbaceous Stratum

The PAST!!!!! • The native Indians of Argentina, just described the national park as “Great Waters” in Guarani. • They also named some cascades, “Devil’s Throat,” or “Hidden Throat.” • There is also a legend that goes with the rainbow that lays across the falls. • God told a Shaman that he was going to show the world something spectacular. No one believed him. Then, on a full moon there was a flash of lighting and rainbow appeared!! • The native Indians were eventually removed by spanish and portuguese Conquistadors.

Argentina in the Now!! • The Iguazu National Park brings in a lot of tourists to see waterfalls greater than the Niagara Falls! • Eleanor Roosevelt even said “Poor Niagara” after seeing the falls. • Because of the beauty of the falls, architects and the National Park Administration have formed an alliance to make the park an even more enjoyable experience.

  10. Iguazu National Park’s influence on life in Argentina • The Iguazu National Park has brought in lots of tourists for Argentina. This means that it has also brought in a lot of money too. • It has also developed jobs for Argentina, like the ones required to help build visitor center, and other projects to make the experience more enjoable.
