  2. Joint-Stock Company • A forerunner of the modern corporation, the joint-stock company was organized for undertakings that required large amounts of capital. Money was raised by selling shares to people, who became partners in the venture.

  3. Maize • Another word for corn

  4. Powhatan Indians The Native American tribe that Pocahontas belonged to. Her father Wahunsunacock was the chief. The Powhatan’s traded and sometimes helped the English settlers at Jamestown. They also fought wars against them.

  5. Cash crop • An agricultural crop which is grown solely for the purpose of being sold. s grown for sale

  6. Indentured Servant • Someone who agreed to work on a farm for several years, in order to have their passage to the new world paid for. After they completed their contract, the indentured servant would be set free.

  7. Royal Colony A colony under the control of the king.

  8. Proprietary Colony • Individuals or groups to whom Britain had granted land. They were generally free to rule as they wished. People elect the lower house. • Examples- Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware

  9. Charter Colony • Were created by a contract between the people who came and the crown. Charter colonies had an early form on self governance. • People(freemen) elect the lower houseLower house elects the upper houseUpper and lower house elect the governor
