MS Project General Info • MS Project is Microsoft’s project management software that enables project design and management in PC. • MS Project 2000 is selected version. • MS Project is used from own PC, not from University PCs. • MS Project has a lot of different and advanced features but only few of the are used in our project.
Usage of MS Project • Task are first divided in different phases, like PP, I1, I2, I2 and DE. Just like the course is divided. One phase is scheduled as course is scheduled. • The different tasks are entered in to MS Project. They may be part of bigger entity like Studying or they may be single tasks. • Different task are partly designed by project manager and by the group. • Time to complete the tasks and the time requirements for that are partly designed by project manager and by the group.
Usage of MS Project 2 • MS Project is also used to estimate the total time needed for one phase and also the whole project. • MS Project also enables to assign resources for the tasks. Then it is possible to monitor the resource usages, in some level. • MS Project also enables creation of relationships with different tasks.
PMIX • When tasks are entered into MS Project and they are scheduled as needed. Then the project information must be transferred to time reporting system – Tirana. • PMIX is a SW offered by course that handles defined project information transfer to Tirana. • Group members then use Tirana to report the used hours by tasks.
VICA • When tasks are reported to Tirana they can be investigated via VICA. • VICA offers nice pictures about the resource usages within the project. • Problem with VICA is that it uses non standard port (7615) so I’m only able to access that from HUT network or by using my GSM as a modem and call to HUT’s dial up server. • Nokia’s policy does not accept those non-standard port connections.
Final Conclusions • Good to have MS Project for task planning. • Good that PMIX exists. • Good that Tirana exists. • Bad that the reported hours are not going back to MS Project in any way. But we have VICA. • Bad that MS Project does not work as it should be. A well know Microsoft quality ;-)
