  2. Premise • The widespread temporal and spatial distribution of commercial fishing vessels makes them ideal platforms from which to gather basic information for coastal monitoring, modeling, and prediction.

  3. Approach • A partnership of commercial fishermen, entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, and federal agency representatives

  6. Long Term Goal • One hundred or more fully-instrumented fishing vessels, which provide enhanced oceanographic and meteorological data collection capacity for coastal and offshore areas throughout the NW Atlantic.

  7. Initial DevelopmentBegan in 1998 • On-board PC and Wheelhouse software (MIT) • Serial interfaces to sea surface temperature and meteorological sensors (Clearwater Instrumentation) • Telemetry to WHOI data server (WHOI)
