Stevens, PhD US Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) Secretariat US Geological Survey www.gsdi.org +703-648-5119

  2. Create a National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) ……… To encourage the collection, processing, archiving, integration, and sharing of geospatial data and information using common standards and interoperable systems and techniques ….. and accessible via the web

  3. NSDI In the United StatesWhat is the FGDC? • Staff support to the Secretary of the Interior to manage and facilitate the NSDI • About 22 people • But really ……. The FGDC is: …..a committee made up of representatives from 19 cabinet level departments …..

  9. The NSDI today……. • Extensive partnerships established • Standards -- nationally, internationally • Clearinghouse network • e-gov portal developed • Open policy for federal spatial data • One of the President’s management agenda initiatives

  10. Clearinghouse (catalog) Metadata GEOdata Framework Standards Core Components of the NSDI Partnerships

  11. STANDARDS • Data standards • Metadata standards • Metadata standards out for national (ANSI) review • Ultimately to the ISO • System interoperability specifications and standards • Industry – Open GIS Consortium (OGC)

  12. STANDARDS • FGDC standards • Largely metadata • Data standards • Data steward’s responsibility • Strongly encouraged by FGDC • National standards • American National Standards Institute (ANSI) • International Standards Organization (ISO)

  13. The Federal Geographic DataCommittee …. what’s new? • Major focus within the Federal Government • An effort to reach into states and communities • Need a sustained effort to drive the concept and application to the states and local governments • …to keep the pressure on
