  2. Why we need them • The enzyme catalase within the peroxisome uses hydrogen peroxide to form water • Your cells will be damaged without peroxisomes, because peroxisomes are highly toxic

  3. Description • Resemble lysosomes • 0.5-1.5 um in size • Enclosed by a single membrane (phospholipid bilayer) which allows the import of peroxins • Filled with enzymes which speed up processes in the peroxisome

  4. Description This diagram is the inside of a cell. All the blue spheres aside from the nucleus are peroxisomes. There a several hundred in each human cell.
