  2. The Land • Location: • On the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. Shares borders with Turkey in the North, Iraq to the East, Lebanon to the West, and Jordan to the South. The southwestern corner of Syria, called “Golan Heights” is occupied by Israel. • Landforms: • Mountain Ranges: Bishri, Abu-Rujmayn, Ar-Ruwaq, Anti-Lebanon • Tallest Peak= Mt Hermon (2814 m or 9232 ft) • Deserts: Homs and Syrian

  3. The Land (cont.) • Natural Resources: petroleum, phosphates, iron, chrome and manganese ores, asphalt, rock salt, marble, gypsum, and hydropower. • Water Systems: • Lakes: Al- Assad, Jabul, Qattineh, Utayba, Khatunieh, Mzereeb, Al-Baath, Massadeh • Rivers: Euphrates, Khabur, Orontes

Climate and Vegetation • Wildlife: • Hyenas, jackals, wolves, foxes, wild boars, some bears • Deer, squirrels, antelope, gazelle, porcupine, hares, and otters, Syrian hamster • Vipers, chameleons, lizards, locusts, sand flies • Buzzards, eagles, falcons, flamingoes, ostrich, pelicans • Domestic: Camel, goat, sheep, cattle, chicken, horses, donkey • Vegetation: • Yew, fir, poplar, and oak trees • Limes, date palms, apricots, olives, grapes, and various grains

History and Current Event • 1975: Archaeologists discover ancient city of Ebla in northern Syria, showing Syria as a home to one of the most ancient civilizations on Earth, which spread from the Red Sea to Turkey in the North to Mesopotamia in the East in 2500 B.C. • Damascus was settled in 2500 B.C. and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world

The U.S. is trying to coax Syria away from its ties with Iran and Islamic militants.

Economy • GDP: $54.35 billion (2.2% growth expected) • GDP Breakdown: agriculture 19%, industry 34%, services 47% • Exports: Crude oil (155,000 barrels per day), minerals, petroleum products, fruits and vegetables, cotton fiber, textiles, clothing, meat and livestock, wheat • Literacy: around 80% age 15 and over • Currency: Syrian pounds (46.8599 per U.S. dollar)

Culture • Religions: 90% Muslim, 10% Christian, >1% Jewish • Languages: Arabic, English, French, Kurdish, Armenian, and Turkish. • Traditional Food: olives, salads, grilled chicken or lamb, Sharwa (street meat), Druze cousa (stuffed zucchini) • Building style: some homes built with dirt and stone, other buildings made with more modern materials such as iron, concrete, and steel • Traditional Clothing: • Women: a thob (a dark cotton embroidered dress with triangular sleeves), a coat made similarly, and a veil • Men: dyed cotton or silk shirts, pants, coats, cloaks, vests, head scarves, and a belt
