Greece has a multitude of landforms such as islands and mountains. • Greece has over 2,000 islands! But people only live on about 170 of them. • These islands are divided into groups. The groups are: Northern Sporades, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and the Ionian. • Over 80% of Greece is covered in mountains. The most famous, and tallest mountain is Mt. Olympus. The Pindus Mountains run from north to south. • Greece’s climate is Mediterranean. Which means it has long, warm summers and cool, mild winters. July is the hottest month when the temperature is about 85˚F. Greek Landforms and climate
Greece’s Economy • Greece has a capitalist economy. • It’s GDP is $298.1 billion • Greece gets a lot of its money from tourism. • Some other ways are food and tobacco processing, textiles, chemicals, and mining. • They grow corn, barley, olives, tomatoes, potatoes, and wheat. • Currency: Euro
Greece’s Government • Capital: Athens • Government type: parliamentary republic • Their president is Karolos Papoulias • The prime minister is Antonis Samaras • The cabinet is appointed by the president but the prime minister can recommend. • The president is reelected every 5 years but they can hold a second term.
Greek Holidays- Easter • Easter is the most important holiday in Greece. • The holiday starts at the beginning of Lent. • On Holy Saturday the people light fireworks and then the the fireworks and use the ash to make crosses on their door. • They eat “magiritsa” a soup made out of lamb, rice, dill, and lemon. • The Greek Orthodox Easter usually isn’t on the same day as the other Christian religions’ Easter.
Greek Holidays • Some major other Greek holidays are: • Epiphany(On this day all the rivers, lakes, and seas are blessed and crosses are immersed in them.) • Ochi Day (This was when the Greek Prime Minister said “no” to Mussolini from entering his country during World War II.) • Christmas(This day isn’t as important as Easter but it is still celebrated with feasting and festivals. Now its gotten a lot of Western inspiration.)
Greek Food • Greek food uses olive oil, cheese, eggplant, zucchini, yogurt, rabbit, wine and fish a lot. • Some popular dishes: • Gyros- roasted meat with sauce and toppings on pita bread. • Moussaka-eggplant casserole • Baklava- pastry layers filled with nuts and covered in syrup.
The Olympics • The Olympics were first started as a festival to honor Zeus. • The athletes instead of competing with teams as we do now, they competed individually. • Some of the sports were: • Boxing • Equestrian (Chariot racing, Riding) • Pankration (a combination of boxing and wrestling. The only thing you couldn’t do was bite or poke out the other’s eye.) • Pentathlon (Discus, Javelin, Jumping, Running, Wrestling) • Running • Wrestling • The winners received an olive tree wreath on his head and have his name announced by the herald. • Only men could compete. Women could not, participate or watch.
Ancient Greek Religion • The Greeks believed in multiple gods and goddesses. • Each city worshipped a different one. For example- Athens worshipped Athena. • Some major gods and goddesses: • Athena- goddess of wisdom and war • Zeus-the king of the gods. God of the weather • Hera- wife of Zeus, queen of the gods. Goddess of weddings and marriage. • Apollo- the god of the sun, truth, music, poetry, dance, and haling. • Poseidon- the god of the sea and horses.
The Parthenon and the Acropolis • You can visit the Parthenon or the Acropolis, which are Ancient Greek ruins. • The Parthenon was once a temple to the goddess Athena • The Acropolis was a hill with many temples on it.
Mykonos • Mykonos is an island off the coast. • This is the most popular island. • You can go jet-skiing, windsurfing, horseback riding, parasailing. • Mykonos is also known for its fabulous nightlife. • A popular thing is to just walk around, tour the island, or go swimming in the Aegean Sea.
Cephalonia • Cephalonia is an island. • It has beautiful beaches and caves. • It draws tourists who want a beautiful, calm, and peaceful place. • You can ride a kaiki, which is a traditional wooden boat used for fishing.
Santorini • Santorini is another island. • All around Santorini is the classic white building with the blue, dome-shaped roofs. • A great thing to do is to hike around Santorini, for ithave great views. • Santorini is also full of fascinating, historical attractions. From old wineries to museums.
Museums • When you go to Athens you should go to the museums. • They have museums on everything, from archeology to art. • Some museums are National Archaeological Museum, Benaki Museum, and the Acropolis Museum.
