  3. acquire (verb) Meaning: to obtain or get something; to gain by trade or purchase Example: When I save up enough money, I am going to acquire a new cell phone. I want to acquire the newest video game system for my birthday.

  4. exclusive (adjective) Meaning: limited; private; restricted Example: The drama club at this high school is exclusive, only kids with professional experience may join it. The golf club in my neighborhood is exclusive in its membership.

  5. cylinder (noun) Meaning: a shape like a tube or a can Example: In art class I decorated a small cylinder to use as a pencil holder. Calculating the volume of a cylinder is not difficult if you know the correct formulas.

  6. mechanism (noun) Meaning: a system of moving parts within a machine Example: The flash mechanism inside my camera broke and now I can’t take pictures at night. A pencil sharpener has a fairly simple mechanism inside it but it is very useful.

  7. intermittent (adjective) Meaning: stopping and starting, over and over again Example: The intermittent chatter from the crowd broke the musician’s concentration. The controller to my favorite game works intermittently which makes play difficult.

  8. intolerable (adjective) Meaning: impossible to endure or experience Example: The terrible heat made the long bus ride almost intolerable. The smell of burning popcorn is intolerable when I feel sick.

  9. salvage (noun) Meaning: something that has been saved from destruction or loss Example: When I go to the beach, I use a metal detector to find salvage like coins and jewelry. In the novel Ship Breaker, the main character works to find valuable salvage on wrecked or sunken ships.

  10. stationary (adjective) Meaning: not moving or not able to be moved Example: I got a stationary bicycle so that I can train even when it rains. The play house is so heavy that now it is stationary instead of movable.
