  2. As many as 10,000 mobile phones are stolen every month. Here are some practical measures you can take to keep your mobile phone safe: Don’t leave your mobile phone in view, clipped to your belt, or on top of a shopping bag or in view in a car. OUT OF SIGHT IS BETTER Plan where you are going and consider the safest route. Consider using busy, well lit areas. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly when you are using your phone. Is anyone watching you? Appear confident – try to look alert and walk TALL, you will be less likely to be singled out as a possible target. Don’t walk with your HEAD DOWN, hands in pockets with your IPOD on. You will appear to be an easy target.

  3. If you can, avoid walking alone at night particularly in areas you are not familiar with. • If you think you are being followed: • Change your route • Make for somewhere busier and well lit • Don’t be afraid to ask for help If you do have to use your phone when out and about “Don’t switch off” Be aware of who is around you. Ideally keep the phone concealed at all times.

  4. Avoid using your phone near to or inside railway stations or other public transport locations. If someone asks you for the time USE A WATCH NOT YOUR PHONE Never give your phone to a stranger who asks to use/ look at/ borrow it. Switch your phone to silent or vibrate where a ring tone might attract attention.

  5. What can you do to make a thief’s job harder?? Each phone has a unique reference number It may be called the Electronic Serial Number or IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identifier). You can obtain the IMEI number by typing *#06# into your phone: STAR HASH 06 HASH It will give you a 15 digit number. Make a note of this number If your phone is stolen, the phone company can block the phone and the police can record the information to be checked when stolen phones are recovered from thieves!

  6. The IMEI should also be typed on the inside of your phone You should also register your phone on the property database immobilise.com – this is completely FREE OF CHARGE! If your phone or any other registered item is lost or stolen, use Immobilise to instantly tell police, insurers, and the second-hand trade. These actions help greatly in the recovery of your property and capture of thieves.

  7. For Example: Open your contacts list on the phone. Program ICE- “In Case of Emergency”- with the name of your emergency contact into your speed dial: 1 ICE1 MUM 2 ICE2 Andy W 3 ICE3 Fred B Nearly the end Have you heard of ICE? It means: In Case of Emergency By putting ICE infront of someone in your contacts list on your phone will allow the emergency services to find the person you want informing in an emergency. Don’t forget to inform the people that you put as ICE contacts that you have done so. It should also be numbers which will work if someone needs to speak to them in an emergency

  8. To recap: Consider your surroundings and your personal safety when out and about Consider where you use your phone and how you use it Record the IMEI number of your phone Don’t forget ICE entries in your phones Register your phone at www.immobilise.com

  9. Have a safe summer and enjoy yourselves
