Metering • Isolate Domestic Water Lines From Irrigation • Best to avoid fire lines to reduce meter size needed • Meter Domestic and Irrigation • Make sure meters are installed per manufactures specs. • Make sure minimum and maximum flows matches meters accuracy parameters. Can be off 30%-40% Building meters need to read down to .5 gpm Check Calibration Regularly
CSU San MarcosWater conservation program • Economics Using todays rates, our avoided costs are ~$167,000/year and increasing each year for water only. Combined with sewer, savings are ~$270,000/year. Include Sewer in avoided cost calculations • With total irrigation meter, you can negotiate removing irrigation from the sewage charge • Expenses can be recouped through chargebacks and detecting leaks
Domestic water efforts • Installed .5 gpm sink aerators from 2.2 gpm • Waterless Urinals (Why it is successful) • Maintenance shop in charge of chemical levels in urinals • Chose model with larger drain opening • Custodial cleans daily per spec • Installed 1.2 gallon toilets with monthly PMs and fix leaks as part of PM. • Maintain building pressures at minimum levels to help reduce leaks.
Domestic water efforts • Daily monitoring of make up water at Central Plant • Make leak repair a priority • Reduced blown down rate of cooling towers • Leak detection program (annually) • Check metering accuracy • Isolate mains to identify leaks. When campus is closed. • (this is a good time to identify bad valves) • Read building meters when buildings are empty.
Irrigation conservation Efforts • Isolate from Domestic Water Metering and install master metering if possible • Irrigation Management System • Easy to use with the following attributes: • Flow monitoring - detects high flow and low flow • Rain monitoring - turns off irrigation based on amount of rain. • Or hydrometers in soil measuring water content. • Evapotranspiration calculations – increases and decreases irrigation based on weather conditions other than rain. • Alarms when leaks or obstructions are detected, electrical alerts, uses Ethernet to short range radio. • Radio remote control for irrigation specialists in field. • Reporting information for consumption, billing and budgeting. • Centralized programing
