  1. Bell Ringer • In your opinion, what is the purpose of this poster? Is it effective, does it make you want to buy U.S. Government bonds?

  2. Chapter 16 War and Revolution Section 2: The War

  3. 1914-1915: Illusions and Stalemates • Government propaganda stirred up national hatreds before the war. • Propaganda is ideas that spread to influence public opinion for or against a cause. • When the war began, propaganda was used to urge people to defend their own country.

  4. The majority of people thought their country’s cause was just. • All European wars since 1815 had only lasted a few weeks. In August 1914, most people thought the war would be over by Christmas.

  5. The Western Front • On the Western Front, Germany swept through Belgium into northern France and was stopped a short distance from Paris at the First Battle of the Marne. • The Western Front turned into a stalemate, with neither side able to push the other out of the system of trench warfare. • The trenches stretched from the English Channel nearly to the Swiss border. • For four years both sides remained in almost the same positions.

  6. The Eastern Front • On the Eastern Front, the war was far more mobile. • The Russian army moved into eastern Germany but was defeated at the Battle of Tannenberg and the Battle of Masurian Lakes. • This ensured Russia was no longer a threat to invade Germany. • The Russians did defeat Austria-Hungary and dislodged them from Serbia.

  7. The Italians, who had been allied with Germany and Austria-Hungary, broke their alliance in 1915. • The Italians attacked Austria-Hungary making Germany to come to their aid. • Together Germany and Austria-Hungary defeated the Russians in several battles and drove them back.

  8. Bell Ringer • Quick write: Write one or two paragraphs explain what you think trench life was like during trench warfare. Remember a paragraph is at least 5 sentences. Turn it in on the front counter.

  9. Trench Warfare • Trench Warfare- fighting from ditches protected by barbed wire
