  13. Research Highlights:Spectral Hypergraph Partitioning • Proved that non-uniform hypergraphs can be partitioned using spectral methods in a consistent way. • Such results previously known only for graphs and uniform hypergraphs. • Used matrix concentration inequalities. • Appeared in Annals of Statistics 2017.

  14. Research Highlights:Graph Embeddings and Kernel Learning • Proved the surprising cross-domain result that the Lovasz θ function is equivalent to a Kernel learning problem! • Potent consequences: • Planted clique problem can be solved by SVMs • Finding Persistent clique in Multiple Graphs • Appeared in JMLR 2013.

  15. Research Highlights:ANATOMY • Predicting performance of multi-core memory is complex due to myriad technological, design and architectural choices • ANATOMY: Queueing model for memory characteristics combined with an analytical model for extracting workload characteristics • Predicts memory latency with less than 10 percent error • Appeared in ACM Sigmetrics 2014

  19. Summer School

  20. Why CSAUSS? • Conceptualized and organized by CSA research students • 80+ invitees (mostly 3rd year UG students) • Diversity in location, institution, gender, background • Sikkim to Thiruvananthapuram, 40% women • Introduce you to a new experience, highlighting the joys of scholarship, conceptual strength and research • Change the way you think about Computer Science • Outreach program for future students • Opportunity for our own research students to hone their pedagogical skills for a future academic life

  21. Research Life-cycle • New Problem Definition • Creative Solutions • Analysis of Solutions • Indian research largely mired in (3), whereas Western research is successful in (1) and (2) • Failing of our educational system which emphasizes • analysis, not creativity • rote knowledge, not knowledge extension • conformity, not out-of-box thinking • herd mentality, not individuality …

  22. Need to be Goats, not Sheep! Indian Students

  23. Research is “दंगल” Constantly engage with the problem Luck favors the prepared mind (Pasteur/Hamming) Kekule discovered cyclic structure of benzene afterhaving a dream of a snake chasing each its own tail In India, we would have saidनाग पंचमी !

  24. Long-term Our fond hope is that this week’s experience will motivate many of you to pursue higher studies and a long-term career in the research arena …
