  2. What are clouds made of? • Six friends were looking at large, white, puffy clouds in the sky. This is what they said: Trista – “I think clouds are made of large drops of water.” Lee – “I think clouds are made of soft, cotton like material.” Manny – “I think clouds are made of smoke that rises from the land.” Rosie – “I think clouds are made of evaporated water in the form of a gas.” Glenda – “I think clouds are made of tiny drops of water or tiny ice crystals.” Leticia – “I think clouds are made of spongy material that holds water in it.” Which friend do you most agree with? Explain why

  3. Rainfall • A group of friends was looking up at a rain cloud. Each had a different idea about how rain falls from the clouds. This is what they said: Will – “I think rain falls when clouds melt.” Chandra – “I think rain falls when the clouds open up.” Bettina – “I think rain falls when the clouds get too cold.” Fern – “I think rain falls when clouds are shaken or pushed together.” Lorna – “I think rain falls when the evaporated water in clouds condenses.” Marcus – “I think rain falls when water drops in the clouds get too heavy.” Jonah – “I think rain falls as the ice crystals in the clouds begin to melt.” Nona – “I think rain falls when water falls through little holes in the clouds.” Which friend do you most agree with? Explain your answer.

  4. Video Questions • How does an altimeter measure height? • How many layers are in the atmosphere? • What effect keeps heat in Earth’s atmosphere? • What is the layer of atmosphere closest to the ground?

  5. During a thunderstorm, an observer can see lightning before hearing its thunder. Why do we see lightning before we hear thunder? A. Sound travels slower than light. B. Sound needs a medium to travel through. C. Sound cannot reflect off surfaces as easily as light. D. Sound is not processed by the brain as fast as light

  6. Shannon lives in an area of New York that frequently has air temperatures below freezing in winter. Windy conditions also occur and are caused by air that originates in Canada and blows across the Great Lakes. • Which of the following will occur with low winter temperatures as the air mass moves from Canada to New York? A. The northern air mass will mix with water vapor to form rain. B. The air mass will collide with water vapor, decreasing humidity. C. Water vapor will be removed from the air as it passes over the lake. D. Moisture collected from the lake may be released as snow over the cold land

  7. Which atmospheric temperature zone is located between 8 and 32 miles above Earth’s surface and contains an abundance of ozone? • Troposphere • stratosphere C. mesosphere D. thermosphere
